bagging downspouts

Hi Folks,

This is my first post, so go easy on me  :)

I am new to the biz and have not found an answer to this question elsewhere... my question is, about bagging downspouts. some folks bag them other say they don't. what is the right way and why. also, If you do bag what do you use and where do you put the run off when done?  Is this something that you deposit somewhere out of the way with a  large dose of water or take with you? I cannot imagine how that happens.

Thanks,

Ray

Do what you want to do with the runoff in the bag. You are bagging it for a reason, dangerous stuff. You can put it back in the mix. take it home and dump it. Or not bag at all and watch the downspouts very close. Water water, and some more water.

Bagging downspouts is one option and flushing gutters is another option. We bag and flush gutters and the reason why depends on the job. Every job is different and there are factors that will decide weather to bag of flush. A job yesterday the gutters all tied into the foundation drain which goes under ground and heads to an outlet. We flushed the gutters and when it rains that will also flush the foundation drain. We bagged a job the other day because the gutters all dumped into flower beds and into the mulch beds where all the bushes are.

Michael and Brian,
Thanks for your reply. I hear you both, bag and water water water. If bagging the downspout, what do you use as the bag? I was thinking of using pump discharge hose, minimum 2" . Any suggestions?

We use large lawn and leaf bags, we buy them off Ebay

We get like 80 of them at a time, and it works out to be cheaper then Lowes or Home Depot here in Tampa.

I dont bag the downspouts unless it is drainning into  flower beds or  weak type of plants ,  what I have been doing is when I get to the job , first thing walk arround scope out the drains etc and  while setting up I put the  hose end stuck up the downspouts on high and start flooding the area the water will follow its natural couse then water   water  water  water ....... And I have not had any problems , Im new too I have done 17 roofs so far shingle and tile , but have been in cleanning for 35 years,    thanks  welcome    Dabber    Steve

Home Depot sells brightly colored heavy duty reusable tie wraps that wrap quickly around lawn and leaf bags. Quicker and easier to use than duct tape.

Hey Guys,
Thanks again for the tips.  I like the reusable ties idea.  I started using heavy duty garbage bags and rope on the downspouts.  It works well and is easy enough to remove...I will look for the ties at HD. Are they velcro?  I just got a couple of nice straps for hoses and stuff that are velcro.  They work well and can wrap around my 200 feet of hose. (no hose reel yet).

Ray,

The HD wraps are reusable rubber twist ties. They have a tough rubber shell that grips well and a strong wire inside that holds its shape. They're versatile , waterproof and come in various sizes. We're using the 18 inch day-glo orange ... they contrast well on our black lawn and leaf bags ... easy to keep track of.

The product name is '' Gear Tie '' and they have more information and a video @ NITESIZE.COM
