Chlorine strength

Can anyone tell me how to measure the strength of SH (chlorine)?

If I buy 12.5 how do I know that's what I'm getting. Same for Annonyx.

THANKS, Frank

There's no real easy answser for that Frank.  A factual way, albeit quite complex process, can be found here.

Sometimes the SH from my supplier is hotter than at other times.  I just adjust my mix ratio to compensate.

Thanks Ted, you weren't kidding when you said, complex process. I was thinking along the lines like you use to test your pool or hot tub.

I'm going to a water treatment plant and see what they say.

You will know when you start cleaning, if it seems to take forever to clean and you are using the same mix then that is obvious it is weaker SH, and if it cleans nice and even and efficiently then you were sold the good stuff or the stuff you are used to.

I had a supplier who carried Allied, and then one day it just seemed weak. I found out they started using Oddessy since their SH was way cheaper but kept the price the same for me and the pool cleaners. So I went somewhere else and found some good SH. That is what you have to do sometimes.

I just dip my finger in, rub them together with my thumb and pointer finger. If it turns to a milky white, I know it's good!

The pool store that sells 12.5 chlorine is made by NAMCO. I just called and they said that it is made at 15% and has a shelf life of two years. After the 2 yrs. the percent drops but didn't say by how much.   NAMCO 860-649-3666.

I like your answer Severna Pk. MD

They are feeding you a crock of BS.  Univar chemical, one of the largest manufacturers in the US, states that the shelf life is 30 days. And a lot depends on that also as to where and how it is stored for that time period. There is a diagram on here somewhere that shows the drop and time of strength of SH. Its pretty quick.

2 years is a long time, maybe 2 weeks because I have had some fresh stuff sit while on vacation for a week and it was weak when I got home. So I just sprayed my driveway with it to get rid of it. My driveway is always clean anyways just had a little green and acorn stains.

This is my driveway and the before is as dirty as it gets.

If they told you the truth, you wouldn't want to buy it in a month, when it reached 9% strength! hmm

We live in a time period, when businesses [not all] will say darn near anything to make sales.

That's what all the "GO GREEN" hype is about.

Appealing to homeowners who are environmentally conscious. Of course, they could spray the roof with baby shampoo and make it look clean by firing up their pressure washers, as they always end up doing, and blasting the black off with 3000 - 4000 lbs of pressure.

Before I used the proper cleaning method, starting in 1991, I pressure washed many hundreds of roofs, from 1978 to 1991. That's all I knew how to do-or anyone else, as far as I know?

Only I knew aprox what pressure my machines were set at. Today, some of these guys tell homeowners "It's only 500 lbs psi"

I have spent 5-6 hours up on a 2000 sq ft roof pressure washing with 2500-3000 psi. At 500psi [first off, it wouldn't come clean, unless you did 1" strips!] you would be on that roof 3 days! roof cleaning
