SH Vs. Copper

We had a topic started about the effects of SH and Copper gutters/ roofs.  I have seen what happens first hand before, It was along time ago.  I call it education.  Education is usually very expensive or time consuming trying to fix whatever went wrong.
Anyways, I wanted to take this a step further and hopefully help somebody out.  I bought a piece of Copper strip and applied a 30/70 SH & H2O mix to it.  Left  for the day, just got back and the picture below says what happened.

When Copper manufacturers make products like gutters a different mix of other metals or alloys are combined.  The affects of this experiment may have turned out differently with a different Copper surface.

I left within 10 minutes after spraying the piece and there was a pinkish color starting to form.

When going into projects with copper roofing, gutters or anything Copper around, I think the appropriate action to take is rinse before, during and after PERIOD.

I've discovered over the years that copper is extremely weird stuff. It can look beautiful one day and like you know what the next. Acid rain, weather, chemical reactions ect...it can even cause blue streaks down the side of your house without any chemical applied at all. In saying that I have seen copper do more damage than good. Why people still put them up I do not know. If damaged by chemical sometimes it will return to its original tarnished condition but never new. And it could take years to do that. That's been my experience.

We cleaned a cedar roof recently that had beautiful copper gutters & downspouts. We rinsed the gutters during and after the roof treatment and did not see any visible discoloration. These gutters were already pretty dark though, from being exposed to the elements. Customer had not contacted us yet about them and he would because he's very detail orientated. We would never leave the treatment on those gutters to dry.

We don't care for copper flashing, gutters, etc.  We always spray them first, then tarp and rinse afterwards.  They are a pain in the butt and look like crap after they've discolored (in our opinion) but if you get any of your mix on them they definately look worst and can be a potential problem with your customer.
