Questions From a New Roof Cleaner

Here is an email I just got from a new person to roof cleaning

Chris,

Hey it was good talking to you and I'm definitely going to join the
premium membership.  I've been reading up on several forums and I think
you have imparted by far the most knowledge on all those forums.  Thank
you for that.  I know this has probably been asked a 1000 times, but I
have a question of the general profitability of a job.  For instance,
lets say you have the run of the mill suburban home, single story, 2000
square foot home, 400 square foot garage for a total of 2400 square
feet.  Just to make the math easy, say I have a 100 gallon tank to mix
everything in.  How much 1 gallon bleach would go into that 100 gallon tank
if you were making a full 100 gallon mixture?  How many gallons of the
100 gallon mixture would you typically use on the average 2400 sq ft
home?  Would it take the entire 100 gallon tank?  I guess what I'm
getting at is if I was to charge say $400 for that home how much would
it cost me in chemicals for that job?  Nothing specific, but just get me
in the ballpark.  I know I would need to factor in roof snot or
something similar.  But what would it cost you in chemicals to do that
$400 job for the average home?

Thanks a million,

The cost of chemicals is all going to depend on what you pay for chems. The price for SH is different all over the country, and even in your own area. You will need to check with suppliers to see what your cost will be to figure out what you need to charge in order to be profitable. And, remember, chemicals are not your only cost in cleaning roofs.

As KLEEN said, the price per gallon of Chlorine depends on where you live. Everyone has a pool here in SW Florida, so the chlorine is cheap and available everywhere. I pay $1.23 to $1.30 a gallon.

For your example, a 2400 sf shingled roof would require in your 100 gallon tank aprox 30-35 gallons of chlorine [ depending on just how dark the algae discoloration is ] and you would use 40 to 50 gallons of that tank. So the cost of chlorine for me would be just about $35.00

Then there's thickeners and surfactants-depending on how you like your roof mix.

They help the chlorine work and to stick-instead of just running off.

However, if there are plant concerns, they also help the roof mix to stick to the plants and I believe to penetrate and damage the plants.

If I have real plant worries, I just use chlorine and water.

I'm not sure, but I think Chris T and I have been cleaning roofs chemically about the longest of anyone at RCIA ?

Chris knows chemicals-I mean really understands [ chemical makeup and compatibility ] them better than I do though.

But there are a lot of roof cleaning experts here at RCIA. NO OTHER SITE YOU GO TO KNOWS WHAT IS KNOWN HERE!

Much of what other sites do know, they know from reading here and from us posting on their sites. Here is one of my videos you can watch, to see how gently roof cleaning mix can be applied. As you can see, the most of the roof on the left, I had already cleaned about 20 minutes before I started the video. My pump puts out 60psi, but after going through 220 feet of 1/2" ID hose and then a 1/4" brass ball valve and a 16" aluminum wand and then a 1/4" female connector and then a 2540 tip, it's about 40psi total.

What Chuck Bergman says is correct, there is more information on roof cleaning here at the RCIA Forum, then anywhere else in the world! People come here and read our information, then go around to other forums and Facebook, so they can "Look Cool", posting roof cleaning info they got here. If you want to learn about cleaning roofs, there is no better place to be
