Bronze - A Roof Cleaners Best Friend ?

Many of you may be unaware that Bronze has just as good chemical resistance as stainless steel to the roof cleaning chemicals, and costs less!

Plastics like Kynar or PVC are always best for fittings, however these plastic fittings can easily crack when stepped on, etc, etc.

Bronze is a lower cost alternative to stainless steel

Hey Chris, brass and bronze are both better than stainless,..nether of those will rust,..whereas stainless will eventually give up. Bronze and brass just kind of dissolve. I've used more brass fittings than bronze, and honestly if you keep them rinsed they will last a couple of seasons. Heck, I even use galvanized steel for my manifold inside my homemade hose reel and it will last a full season if kept rinsed. THOROUGH rinsing is more valuable than alot of people realize.

Yes, but Bronze is a lot better then Brass, though Brass will work.

Bronze has a C Resistance to the roof cleaning chemical, the same rating as Stainless Steel has. Brass has a D Rating

But, in the real world, if you can find a THICK  Brass or Bronze Hose Barb, and keep it rinsed, it will last for a very long time.

We try and avoid the thin Brass ones sold at Lowes and Home Depot, if possible.

However, when we break down, we will use what we can easily get.

Here in Tampa Florida, we have several Marine Hardware places around, and they carry the THICK Bronze and Brass fittings biggrin

Jeff, maybe you ought to order you a couple of the thick Bronze Fittings for your new 1/2 in Versa Matic Roof Cleaning Pump ?

1/2" Schedule 80 PVC is easy to find, so I will be using it. Although brass and bronze work I still prefer the "plastics" when I can use them. PVC has been very good for me,...I do however avoid nylon,..they seem to end up cracking. I did use brass 3/8" adapters with the All-Flo and they held up easily the whole year,..when I took it apart recently I was surprised how good of shape they were in. Could've easily went another two years I believe.

good post Chris.. I will be be rebuilding my entire trailer this winter, as its to cold for roof cleaning up here in Maryland. I will be looking at what didn't make it through the year and replacing it with better options that you have mentioned.. One thing I am looking for is the pvc elbows for the hose reels. I have one that I am about to put on , ( which I found in my shop in a box) but not sure where it came from , or where to order another

Here is an option for you Lee http://www.hdhudson.com/professional-sprayers/professional-products/product-details/?id=170

Lori from Pressure Washer Products used to carry the plastic swivels as well.

I use all PVC pipe with brass fittings and everything made it through the whole season. Oh my swivels are stainless and have 2 seasons on them with little problems. Like Ray I rinse after each job , and only takes a few minutes and I rinse after each job. This makes a hugh difference.

PVC or Kynar fittings are the most chemical proof, but in the real world, fittings made out of plastic get either stepped on, or abused, and then they crack.

Heavy Bronze can take being stepped on, but one must be careful when using them on a pump. Since they will not break, they can break your pump.

Many people may have overlooked Bronze, as a material we as roof cleaners can use.
