Cleaning Roofs With Powdered Pool Shock ?

Powdered Pool Shock is generically called Calcium Hypochlorite. It is pretty cheap and easy to buy almost anywhere.

It also will not leave salt behind when it evaporates as sodium hypochlorite will, so it is safer for no rinse roof cleanings, gutters or not.

It can "work" for cleaning roofs, however it has a serious problem, it can leave a white scale over everything that will take some acid and pressure washing to remove.

The pictures below are of Clyde, one of our certified roof cleaners, demonstrating what it can do, if you use it in hard water.

Clydes%2520seal%2520of%2520Approval.jpg

Since SH is so cheap, and easy to get here in Tampa, I have not played with calcium hypochlorite as much as I wanted to. My guys are very very busy, and on commission, so they resent me "playing around" with our proven roof cleaning system.

I have always wanted to try some Calcium Hypochlorite in NON ALKALINE Water http://roofcleaninginstitute.org/index.php/topic/225-ro-and-di-water/

I miss having Clyde around, he came here to Florida, and tried to come see me, but I had a lot of things going on, at that time.

I've cleaned quite a few roofs with Calcium Hypochlorite. It DOES work, and if it wasn't for liquid hypo,...I'd be using CH to clean roofs. So, it is feasible,..just not practical when there's a better alternative. But mix the stuff and let it settle,..then spray,...DO NOT keep stirring the CH,..there will ALWAYS be undissolved material in a batch of CH,...NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU STIR OR MIX!!!! In fact keeping it stirred up will create more residual to deal with.

I also tried CH.  It left a white scale not only on the roof and plants but also inside my pumps.  It flat gummed them up...  I will never use CH again.  I still have some CH left over...  Any suggestions as what to do with it?

The scale is worse at higher PH.

So, I was thinking, we should add some acid to the water to lower the PH of the water, and maybe that helps reduce/eliminate the scale

Never tried lowering the PH of the water I mixed CH with?..Maybe in the future I will try that just for the sake of it.
Yea Marcus, it will make a mess,..I was diligent on keeping everything rinsed and kept wet. I also rinsed roofs back then so drying on the shingles wasn't an issue we dealt with either.

When house washing we rinse with a pickup tube with "Jet-Dry" or other dishwasher rinse aid bucket of water to keep windows from streaking or etching. just keep it all wet between cleaner solution and rinse solution.

BTW, post more often Jeff, always good info!

The Poor water solubility of Calcium Hypochlorite makes it a real hassle to use! That stuff settles in the tank, and is a bitch to rinse out, especially if you only have holes in the TOP of the tank!

I always thought the the solubility was fairly quick,..of the soluble "parts" of CH,...It will mix readily and fast,...BUT,..it is the insoluble "parts" that never dissolve that make it seem insoluble and cloudy. It will settle out though and become a clear liquid. But it will still leave residue on anything it dries on, even after the settling out,..just not as bad. Done successfully only by TRUE professionals,.Ha,Ha,..Chris,..that should be the certification test,..cleaning successfully 10 roofs with CH,..then you get certified,...because then you definitely paid your dues,Ha,Ha,...

What did AC end up doing with all the buckets he had leftover? It still had a purpose for pool shock if nothing else, so it really wasn't wasted,..aside from the labeling. Over on his board, is there anyone using it or trying to make it work?

Do you know about that special water that window cleaners and car washers use Jeff ?

It is called Deionized Water, and it is used because it will not spot windows, and cars are washed and rinsed with it at night, in car dealerships.

Calcium Hypochlorite has more scale formation in hard water, maybe the right water will make it work better ?

IF we could solve the scale problem Ray, it might help out roof cleaners who have trouble getting SH ?

LOL, then, we can "go into business together" by selling a combination window and roof cleaning setup apparatus (Skid)

Have you ever seen the big tanks of Deionized Water Jeff ?

They look like North Korean Nuclear Missles, but not to "worry"! We will put a wrap on them biggrin

Yea Chris, I have seen those tanks. Windows and new cars is a good market for spot free cleaning,..Who knows, maybe it would make CH at least better. But how much better?? One can only experiment. I was thinking of doing what you mentioned the other day, and using a more acidic water to mix it with.

I have alternatives for just about every other cleaner I use,..but a feasible substitute for roof chemical. If for some reason I had to go back to CH I would like to be armed with as much info as possible. So CH never leaves my thinking altogether.

 Read this Jeff !

Uses

Purified water is suitable for many applications, including autoclaves, hand-pieces, laboratory testing, laser cutting, and automotive use.[3] Purification removes contaminants which may interfere with processes, or leave residues upon evaporation. Although water is generally considered to be a good electrical conductor—for example domestic electrical systems are considered particularly hazardous to people if they may be in contact with wet surfaces—pure water is a poor conductor. Conductivity of sea-water is typically 5 S/m,[4] drinking water is typically in the range of 5-50 mS/m, while highly purified water can be as low as 5.5 μS/m, a ratio of about 1,000,000:1,000:1.

CH has NEVER "left" my thoughts, not so much for me (SH is cheap and plentiful here in Tampa), but as an alternative roof cleaning chemical, for our roof cleaning brothers where SH is not as cheap, and as easy to obtain.

Plus, CH evaporates, and leaves Calcium, not plant kiling Salt!

It is also a FAR better disinfectant then SH, and roofs I have cleaned with it seem to stay cleaner longer, then roofs cleaned with SH.

CH, if we can ever manage to "perfect it", has serious advantages for a "Splash and Dash" roof cleaner.

Tarp the plants, Splash,  then pull the Tarps and  Dash, no worries about rain or the morning dew bringing plant killing salt down on the landscape.

Once the chlorine in the CH has evaporated, it is about a Biodegradable and environmentally friendly roof cleaning chemical (GREEN) as it gets!

Calcium, unlike Salt, will not alter the ecosystem, like a ton of salt will!

Here in Tampa Florida, our soil is sandy, so any salt that gets in the soil, is soon washed out of it by the rain.

But up north, salt run off from a roof cleaning, can effect the landscaping for many years.

Plants don't LIKE to grow in Salt you know ?

IF I was a roof cleaner using CH instead of SH to clean roofs with, I would not lose many jobs to an SH roof cleaner Jeff, because I would simply present the scientific facts to any potential customer, and guess what ?

I think they would pick me!

It s my opinion Jeff, that someone will someday "perfect" CH for roof cleaning Jeff, and then what ?

It has the potential to effect us ALL, that's what!

The RCIA has always been "at the forefront" of most major discoveries and improvements in roof cleaning Jeff.

The things we all now take for granted for cleaning roofs like Air Pumps, Chlorine stable surfactants, Liquid Gain Ultra, large diameter roof cleaning hose, to name but a few, are all RCIA Pioneered Innovations.

Well, the problems you and others have experienced are the ones we are trying to find out IF they can ever be solved.
