Here's a newer version Chuck and the original link back in March 2009. I added some more information to it as well, as I am taking more steps also to protect customers landscaping.

"In addition to diluting the chemical down with water, we will bag the ends of your downspouts when necessary, collect all the chemical run-off from the roof and dispose of them away from your landscaping. 4 inch drain pipes may be used to direct chemical away from landscaping and/or biodegradable neutralizer will be placed at the ends of the downspouts to neutralize any remaining chemical dripping after the bags or pipe is removed."

Thanks! Only thing is, that link just goes to the RCIA page, not to a newer version of that other link?

Maybe you can fix that-I really like the sound of the newer version!

Really appreciate your fast help response!

I edited the original post.  It has the newer information on it.  Here's also a microsoft word document that you can edit easier.  I believe Bob w/ugly shingles made a pdf version of it.  I can do that too, but it will take me a while.  He can probably do it faster.

Edited microsoft word document also, per Apple's suggestion. "biodegradable neutralizer"

The one change would be the statement "We always bag the end of your downspouts"

I know that I and I'm sure many others here, do that only as necessary and use other methods of dealing with runoff more than half the time. A flat statement like this, could give a customer reason to complain, part way through a roof cleaning job, or to demand bagging be done, when we may see differently? I have 40' roll up tubing, sometimes dig a hole at the downspout if no plant roots are nearby, dig a trench, leading to a barren area and always flood, flood, flood the gutters with a gutter cane, diluting the runoff to a safe level.

I would love to use this excellent link, if that one statement could be removed?

Thanks!

Chuck

You may not be able to remove/change it since it is a PDF file. If you can, I would suggest you change it to "we always dilute or bag the ends of the downspouts".

That way you've got the option.

If you copy and paste the text you should be able to change it.    ????????

Thanks Gary, but I wanted to use the link, so whoever owns it, would have to modify it, so it was worded differently.

It's says RCIA Bulliten, is it not changeable by anyone here?

Thanks!

Mike, if I were a competitor, I would have a field day with the fertilizer part of that bulletin!

A biodegradable neutralizer sounds much better! Remember, fertilizer was one component of the Oklahoma City Bomb!

Then, there is this

Bleach, fertilizer mixture sickens people at Lowe's

Published: Tuesday, July 24, 2007, 2:42 PM     Updated: Tuesday, July 24, 2007, 2:45 PM

St. Tammany bureau

A chemical spill at a Slidell home improvement store sickened about 10 people last week, according to emergency officials.

Lowe's employees were unloading a truck at 39184 Natchez Drive on Thursday night when bleach spilled onto fertilizer, causing it to smoke and stink, Slidell Police Capt. Kevin Folz said.

A cashier called 911, and store employees used a forklift to move the smoking pallet of fertilizer outside. Police and hazardous materials personnel from the Slidell area fire department arrived at 9:15 p.m. and evacuated the store.

Two employees who had tried to stop the chemical reaction with kitty litter were having difficulty breathing and complained of a burning sensation on their skin. One unidentified 54-year-old employee began to vomit and was checked by rescue workers but refused treatment, Folz said.

Fire Chief Larry Hess said the spill released chlorine gas from the bleach and 31 people, mostly employees, were evaluated. Ten people were treated for symptoms such as watery or burning eyes, but no one was hospitalized. After about 40 minutes of ventilation, employees were allowed back inside the store.

A manager at Lowe's said Tuesday that no one suffered any long-term health effects.

The incident occurred when a forklift was unloading a pallets from a truck in the receiving area of the store, according to Folz. A case of bleach fell onto a pallet of fertilizer, and one of six bottles began to leak. "It was a very small amount," Hess said.

The fire chief praised the employees' decision to move the fertilizer outside. "That was a smart thing to do," he said. Hess added that quick action by the workers, along with rescue personnel and police, "kept it from being a serious situation.

Another reason why the word (and use of) fertlizer may be better off not used. If I am a competitor, and I hear a customer tell me she is going with another company who uses fertilizer to neutralize chemical run off, I would show he stuff like this!

Hypochlorite plus Urea Explosion

A municipal water treatment company decided to switch from chlorine gas (Cl2) disinfectant to liquid 12.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Part of the motivation for the switch was to avoid the OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) requirement for a Process Hazard Analysis. They also believed the liquid would be safer than the chlorine gas.

Hypochlorite plus Urea Explosion
Exploded tank
At one of their remote facilities, they had a 2500-gallon polyethylene tank that previously held a liquid fertilizer consisting of 78% urea and sulfuric acid (1:1 ratio). Someone in management decided that they could reuse the liquid fertilizer tank for the sodium hypochlorite, most likely to save a few dollars on a new tank.

On the day that the liquid sodium hypochlorite tanker arrived, the 2500-gallon polyethylene tank still had a few inches of the leftover liquid fertilizer. The site safety manager was there along with another employee of the water treatment company as well as the truck driver. The site safety manager decided to try to offload a little of the sodium hypochlorite and see “what would happen.” There was an immediate and strong reaction that generated either a white cloud of gas and/or fizzing.

The initial reaction “scared” the site safety manager who then decided to get a new tank from another location. While the new tank was being delivered, the site supervisor showed up at the remote site. He cut the drainpipe to the 2500-gallon tank and ordered the contents to be poured out onto the ground and the tank flushed with water. Even though the new tank had already arrived at the site, the site supervisor decided to try to offload the sodium hypochlorite into the used tank one more time. At first, it seemed to go okay, and so he gave the order to increase the flow of sodium hypochlorite. Just about then, the tank exploded, as seen in the accompanying photo.

The site supervisor and other employees present were seriously injured. The site supervisor died within about 48 hours. The injured employees sued the trucking company as well as their employer.

Chemaxx was hired to determine the underlying cause of the explosion. Other issues in the case included the roles and responsibilities of the tanker transport company, the employer (the water treatment company), and the individual employees. The employer’s state of knowledge and OSHA Hazard Communication Standard training were important factors in the analysis.

A number of experimental methods were used to investigate this occurrence, including mixing experiments, the analysis of the solutions after mixing, and the analysis of the gases given off via GC/MS.

The mixing experiments revealed that the order of mixing was important. When the sodium hypochlorite was added to an excess of liquid fertilizer, there was only a modest reaction or heat generated. On the other hand, when the liquid fertilizer was added to an excess of sodium hypochlorite, an extremely vigorous reaction plus significant heat was generated. One possible explanation seemed that when there is excess of alkaline sodium hypochlorite, the sulfuric acid is neutralized and what remains is sodium hypochlorite and urea, a mixture said to produce explosive nitrogen trichloride:

It’s suspected that there were also some bulk layering and subsequent mixing involved in the incident such that the sodium hypochlorite layered on top of the more dense liquid fertilizer. This layering may have allowed the accumulation of excess NaOCl and NaOH needed to neutralize the H2SO4 and produce the urea plus NaOCl solution.

It is worth noting that the MSDS for the sodium hypochlorite listed urea and acids as incompatible materials and that the MSDS for the liquid fertilizer listed chlorites and chlorine bleach as incompatibles. The site supervisor knew the two materials were incompatible and the site safety coordinator (who left to get a new tank) did the site OSHA training on sodium hypochlorite. Furthermore, a sales representative from the liquid sodium hypochlorite company had told the site supervisor (and others) that brand new tanks needed to be used for the sodium hypochlorite.

This seemed to be a classic case of management being in a hurry, taking risks to meet a schedule, and trying to save a few dollars whenever possible.

Dr. Fox is an explosion expert, fire expert, and chemical expert with extensive experience in OSHA chemical regulations and chemical safety.

Thanks Chris, I am glad I'm still appreciated.  I had help from two other graphic artists with the RCIA logo.  The final official RCIA MASTER LOGO was created by my vision of the best qualities of Keith w/KBK design and Shawn w/monsters co. design.'

It took a great deal of patience, back and forth e-mail editing and revisions with Shawn, but I feel like and it was voted by the RCIA members as the best looking and most professional logo to represent the RCIA.

I think it's attracted a lot of traffic and brought guys in to want to learn and become certified by the RCIA to have the rights to use the logo.

The importance of a company logo and it's visual impact go a long way.

One of the most recognizable logos in the world does not even have to have the company name on it anymore, the design is so solid and eye catching and has been around for so long, the company has removed it's name from the logo since 1995.

For them, I will try and post someRCIA%20Roof%20Cleaning.jpgRCIA_logoPROOF3.jpg

LOL! Those were the good 'ol days. I remember working on the logo back in April 2009. Back when the RCIA was just getting started and gaining some good traffic.

I tried to look up the original RCIA logo thread when I was first designing it and showing my revisions to members, but it got deleted. Maybe it's still in the bowels of the forum somewhere.
