Great articles Mike! The first phase and also the hardest part of SEO is building a solid foundation. (Getting quality/original content on your site, sighning up for and adding content in the social network areana and getting your Google accounts in order.) This first stage could take 6-8 months and sometimes up to a year of putting in many, many hours a week until you start ranking well for your keywords.
The second phase is an ongoing process the never ends and it's the maintenance phase. Once you rank well and all that hard work has paid off, it's not over. Even though it's not over, this second phase is much easier then the first phase because now it is just maintaining. Searching and reading articles like Mike posted are part of the second phase because now you are following the never ending algorithum changes that Google makes. You still need to continue the backlinking campaign, article marketing and on-site SEO (adding fresh content) but at a less extereme pace then the first phase.
OK..I'll stop blabbing and dump the rest of my 64 oz. coffee. (I swear, I need to switch to de-caff)!
Ray,
Screw decaf and keep going. I'm starting to enjoy these subjects. I'll send you some 5 hour extra strength energy shots if that helps.

Sometimes it helps to plan your SEO efforts. Make a daily and weekly checklist of things to do. Daily can be making backlinks and off site SEO. Then weekly is blog posting for your site and others etc. There is so much on our plates it helps to have a plan!
So much great content in this thread alone! It does consume a lot of time to lay the foundation as Ray pointed out. And then all the continuous maintenance after that. The way to eat an elephant is one spoon full at a time. Otherwise you will get overwhelmed and won't get anywhere. Plan your work and work your plan. Like A to Z stated, right down a check list of all the things you need to do along with realistic due dates. Then start knocking them out one at a time!
Great thread. And for me it can be overwhelming if looking at this , but taking SEO one piece at a time makes it easier. This shouldnt be a all out sprint it should be looked at as a marathon. Speaking of which, I'm way behind on my list and need to get caught up.

That's a great way to look at it Brian! Also, just like your equipment, web sites and off-site SEO needs to be maintained.
