Liquid Gain Dishwashing Soap is THE Best Store Bought Surfactant For Roof Cleaning
Permalink

We have been using it everyday, on both tile and shingle roofs, and it rocks! We buy it at Family Dollar Store, they have 44 oz Original scent NON Antibacterial Liquid Gain Dishwashing Soap for 3 dollars a bottle! One of these per 100 gallons of mix seems about right.

It is also strongly scented. It appears to be totally chlorine compatable (after all, it has Ammonyx IN it) combined with Sodium Laurel Sulfate, that is also totally compatable with a roof cleaning mix!

You can use more (or less) then 44 ounces per 100 gallons of mix. Just for kicks, we threw 3 of the 44 ounce bottles of it in 125 gallons of roof cleaning mix on an 8/12 pitch shingle roof, and it stuck like glue!

Then, we put 4 of the 44 ounce bottles in 100 gallons of mixed chlorine and water on a Friday afternoon, and took the weekend off. On Monday, we cleaned a couple shingle roofs with THAT mix.  It was still real soapy, and cleaned great. We noticed NO weakening of the mix at all!

I feel very confident about suggesting it. Theoretically, it should have worked, because all  it's ingredients are compatable with Chlorine, unlike any other liquid dishwashing soap. But, we never rely on Theory, w/o actual on the roof testing.  Original Scent Green Liquid Gain Dishwashing Soap works, it works very well, and will not eat your mix up. Plus, it is cheap, and readily availiable, when you need it!

Awhile back, I published viscosity (thickness charts) for Ammonyx and Myristamine. Though Ammonyx is thinner then Myristamine, to make something even thicker then Myristamine, you add the thinner Ammonyx. This COMBINATION of the two yields a final product thicker then Myristamine by itself!

Go figure ?

Gain is a combination of Lauramine (Ammonyx) and Sodium Laurel Sulfate. It is not as thick as Myristamine, but it seems just as good as Ammonyx, and possibly a bit better, as  far as a surfactant goes, in cleaning ability. Plus, unlike pure Ammonyx, it is quite heavily scented. Roof Cleaning Customers seem to like it, because when it rains, all kinds of good smelling suds come off the roof.

I did a bit of research on Gain Dishsoap. It is from Proctor and Gamble (the makers of Dawn). It is aimed at the Ricans, and other people of the Hispanic persuasion. It is intentionally made to be THE strongest smelling (scented) dishsoap on the market. Proctor and Gamble did a lot of market research and they surveyed the Hispanics. Evidently, the Hispanics equate smell with cleanliness ? Gain dishsoap dominates the ever growing Hispanic market.

I am more concerned with chlorine compatability, cleaning ability, cling, and most of all, COST.

Ready availability at your nearest store is nice too!

Plus, I hate having to ante up a thousand dollars or more, at a time, for drums of Ammonyx, or Myristamine, when I can get it.

The freight eats you alive on that chit!

Our friend Jeff in Pennsylvania has pointed out that he can get 5 gallon pails of nearly pure Sodium Laurel Sulfate off Ebay pretty cheap.

However, I feel a combination surfactant like Gain, with a scent, that I can get quickly whenever I need it, makes up for the slight difference in price. Plus, it is already in 44 oz bottlles, easy to handle, just dump it in, stir, and go!

Gain also seems to thicken the mix up, vs pure Sodium Laurel Sulfate, and to cling a bit bettter. You KNOW it cleans better, or Proctor and Gamble would not have put Lauramine in Gain (Lauramine costs considerably more then Sodium Laurel Sulfate)

Also, and I neglected to mention this before, the addition of a LITTLE TSP (1/4 cup per gallon of total mix) to a mix of Chlorine, Water, and Gain, makes an ass kicking cleaner, that will clean up even a hard core drug addict or alcoholic, LOL

But honestly, most of the time, the TSP is not needed. The mix we have been using for 90 percent of the roofs we clean is one 44 oz bottle of the Gain, to 100 gallons of mix.  We have added three 44 oz bottles for a few really steep roofs, and I purposely added four 44 oz bottles to a mix I allowed to sit over a weekend, to make sure it did not eat my mix up.

We tested the TSP with the Gain on a few steep ass shingle roofs that were in a subdivision called "hidden forest". These roofs are almost totally under trees, 10/12 pitch, and had nearly 2 inches of Algae growth on them!  The TSP enhanced roof cleaning mix made quick work of them, and the three 44 oz bottles of Gain in 100 gallns of mix allowed more dwell time.

One customer remarked that when it rained, all kinds of "good smelling suds" came cascading off his roof.

P&G expands Gain product line to reach Hispanic consumers

CINCINNATI Gain is moving beyond the laundry room with two new products.

As previously reported by Drug Store News, new Gain dishwashing liquid and an expanded Febreze with Gain collection now are available at stores nationwide. Gain dishwashing liquid is the first dish brand to be launched by Procter & Gamble in 37 years, the company said, while the Febreze with Gain original scent will include fabric refresher, Air Effects, candles and Noticeables.

This introduction, in conjunction with the expansion of the Febreze with Gain collection, was designed to help P&G’s home care category increase awareness of Gain’s scent among more consumers, including scent-conscious Hispanic consumers, the company said.

“The transition of Gain into a megabrand is an exciting step for us because we’re now able to offer Gain’s matching scents in every room of the home,” said Paul Vraciu, Gain North America brand manager. “We recognize that Hispanic consumers are a very important and growing consumer segment. This is P&G’s first dish product designed with the scent-conscious Hispanic consumer in mind. While many Hispanic consumers are familiar with Gain, they are not aware of Gain’s scent experience. Our goal was to make strategic marketing choices that would help Gain better connect with this audience.”

That works out to be $8.72 per gallon. A heck of a lot cheaper than MAO at $20 per gallon delivered

If you do 4 jobs for 500 each, you would save $11.50 on 2 k in sales? I guess I still not connecting the dots from Tuesday.

I didnt do the math yet Mike J. I went through 4 drums of ammonyx this year so it may add up to something.

The smell cover up would be worth a lot more than 3.00 per job. If's it's cheaper, better, or faster I would try anything even if it was horse piss.

Fragrance additives are for the most part over priced and perform poorly in our experience. We only smell up our mix tank and van with it.

If I hear one more time that it smells like a swimming pool around here...

Chris,

Thanks for the info. Shouldn't this be moved to another area other than "General Public Discussion" ?

Hi Chris.

does dish washing liquid leave a film on some types of roof? I read somewhere that it should not be used on Slate. is this true?

Contains biodegradable surfactants. I'm sure to give this a try. Dawn tends to weeken the mix.

Some Slate actually has oil in it, and any soap can remove this oil, and give it a dry appearance. Always do a test spot of Slate first! Or, just do not use any surfactant, and be safe.

I had an entire tank go bad on me one time. I pre-mixed two tanks because I had back-to-back jobs in the same area thinking I would save a few minutes. Second job backs out. It's Friday and now I have a full tank pre-mixed sitting on the trailer until Monday. On that Monday morning I could tell something was not right. You could tell there was seperation in the mix because the bottom 1/4 of the tank was slightly darker then the rest. I get to the job, the mix has been stirred on the ride there, I think it's all cool and I start spraying my roof mix. Entire front has been sprayed and I realize the chits not working. I spray some on my hand and rub my hands together and I feel no heat at all.

At first I blamed the Floromask Green Apple even though I knew it was SH compatible but narrowed it down to the Dawn. After that, I only pre-mix what I am going to use per job. But if this Gain works, I can leave it for a few days with no worries. I'll make a mini roof mix in a mason jar and log down some results.

We get some pretty hot chlorine here in Tampa in the summer. I took four 44 ounce bottles of the Ultra Gain Green Original Scent and dumped them in 100 gallons of Mix and stirred, on a Friday afternoon. We cleaned on Monday, did not check for seperation, nor did we re stir (my guys were told to do both). They just went and sprayed 2 roofs, said it worked great, but was super soapy. This is to be expected with 4 bottles of 44 ounces in only 100 Gallons of Mix!  That is nearly 2 Gallons of Surfactant we deliberately put in only 100 Gallons of Mix, just to see if it would weaken our Mix. LOL, the guys said that was a wicked mix, as far a stickiness. But it was so soapy, the guys had to wait for the soap suds to dissapate, so they could be sure the roof was spotless.

Yes, please make the mini roof mix, and log what you find.

Chris, Saturday I tried two of the 44 oz. bottles of Ultra Gain Green Original Scent (one per 65 gal. tank) and I think I'm sold. No doubt I will stop buying $75 per gallon Green Apple for scent masking because this stuff knocks down the chlorine scent dramaticly. As for the surfactant properties, it worked great but next time I think I will go with 66 oz's per tank. No testing on the separation of the mix because I need to finish off a jar of pickles (experiment material) biggrin
