I think if you made a really really salty water solution, and sprayed a roof with it, that it will clean a roof, over time.

Back on the farm, we used to kill bushes with rock salt and water.

I see NO reason why it will not kill algae, and the salt should dry the chit up as well, hastening it's demise. But for immediate roof cleaning, the answer I think is no.

Mike I know fact that there is hardly no houses if any that is immediately close to the ocean ( this in not counting the Bay or Lagoons)  that has black steaks on the roof, but once you get in a few blocks from the ocean you will start to see stained roofs.

you can google earth houses immediately along the ocean you will seldom see a roof with black streaks, not up here in my area.

And besides Chris T also mentioned in a earlier post, that salt does have a cleaning effect on roofs

if you don't have any thing to do why don't you google earth some houses on the ocean that has stains on their roof and post them!

I think salt water does clean roofs, have you ever noticed roofs very close to the ocean never have black streaks on their roof, never. I would say because its from the salt spray from the ocean, the same reason that their metal light fixtures and etc gets corroded quickly. Thats my opinion Mike.

Thanks guys for your input….sea water is really cheap…but if it worked there would not be any houses around that would need cleaning….. I guess it is true what they say…. It all comes out in the wash. HA HA.

well i have cleaned roofs that are very close to the beach and they had some bad roof stains so that theory to me does not hold any water.

Hey I still remember that time you telling me when you lived on the 10th floor in a high rise, and you said you always had to get off on the seventh floor and walk the stairs the other 3 floors just because you couldn't reach the 10th floor button ha ha

well clyde i looked up ocean city and i found a couple of roofs 1 block back from the beach that have roof stains they were very far and few between. I would think the salt air does not allow the spore to live in the air very long but as far as using it to clean roofs instantly no it wont work and if you used it it would probrably take years to work with constant treatments.

its not really cleaning its just not allowing the spore to sit and grow.

Everywhere in the country probably has different reactions from the ocean. Some probably have bad algae and some may not have any. There are a couple neighborhoods near me that are mostly older roofs and don't have much algae on them. I live a stones throw from the ocean and my neighborhood has really bad algae.
No rhyme or reason.

Reason being that the older roofs don't have any or not much, is the older roofs have little if any limestone in the shingles.   30-35 years ago, NOBODY had thye algae problem. When asphalt content went down and limestone content went up, this all started.  Its all tied to oil prices.

LOL, Maybe I should of clarified. Those older roofs are probably in the 10-25 year range. A lot of Jet shingles and 3 tabs.
I wish it wasn't so darn cold or I would be out hitting the streets.
