I should have seen this coming, but my front page now has a lot of pictures and looks good, but without much text. This is a problem and has caused my homepage to fall off the map! If I search by my my targeted keywords, my subpages will still come up on the first page, but usually not my homepage and the drop in calls I have received in the past 2 weeks shows it has had a negative impact.
Any tips on what I can do with my front page without adding gaudy text to it? I'm temporarily regretting this new website!
By the way, this is a wordpress template, so it would be difficult to modify content on the home page. If content was my only issue, I suppose a new template is needed?

Phil - have you paid someone to SEO your website? You have 179 indexed pages indicating that you've either been very busy with web promotion, at this for a long time, or you've hired a company to help out. If it's the latter, you want to make sure there was no link farming involved, nor 'Black hat' SEO.
Your (relative) score on website grader is very good - 88. You have 9 images without alt tags. Not a Google killer buy any means, but worth correcting. Name the pics Roof_Cleaning_"Something".
You'll want to be 100% sure that it's the content change that got ya before changing it. And content is not just on the main page. It could be a number of things.
My website took a major nose dive early this spring when I added some bells and whistles that changed part of the actual file name of my main page. It auto-changed (thanks to GoDaddy's website tonight, POS) from a .htm extension to a php extension and knocked me out of the running for about 4 weeks.
Perhaps Chris T or some of the SEO gurus will jump in here soon. Also remember, it was about 2 weeks ago, that Google re did the page ranks. Some moved up, and others down and or out. Can you trace it to that?
Good luck getting it sorted out. I feel for ya bud.
//edit// for an after thought. Keyword density appears non-existent on the main page Phil?

Ted, you are correct on the keyword density on the main page. All of the keywords worked well with my previous home page, now it's all pictures and no place for text. I'm probably going to end up changing the site again.
The Alt Tags for pictures is something I started toying with yesterday prior to this post, but i just don't see it being enough. The subpages still show up, as do the google places pages, but there has definitely been a drastic change for some keyword phrases that I checked on a regular basis. I think the actual home page holds more weight than subpages, especially with Google.
All of the SEO on my site was done by me, but I traded services with someone to get the site to look more professional and now I think a more text based homepage is definitely necessary for SEO purposes.

I chose a different word press theme and will work on getting that together this week. It's similar to the theme I have now, but it allows content on the home page as well as showing a different page on the homepage, all of which should help with SEO.
Thanks for the help guys!

Ted, just curious how you are able to see the results on Phils web page. I would like to check out mine. I had a website built, www.roofcleaningpa.com and I don't beleive he did anything to help boost my Google ranking. So I built a site www.roofcleaningpa.net thru Godaddy and tried to make it more Google friendly using my knowledge(which isn't much. LOL) I would like to view my info to see if I can make any changes to boost my Google ranking. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I've got a blog (roofcleanmd.com) and that does well and shows up in the search engines just as my main site does, but the change is more drastic than I was hoping. It's not that I don't show up at all, it's just that my homepage doesn't show up anymore unless google places picks it up.
Now that you mention it, though, I may change the blog website to a roof cleaning only site, with a blog.

Phil, my thought is if you have 2 websites on the front page, that's less space for your competitors. I wanted to do that last winter, but my webgirl didn't like to work.
Tom, I have a nice sized graffiti removal job at a church today, looking forward to trying out a different graffiti removal product on a bigger job. I'll let you know how it goes, but it claims to clean in 90 seconds as opposed to 30 minutes.
I'm half way through changing the template, I was able to get most of the images to work from the previous theme with little photoshop work. The content on the front page is a necessity, don't let anyone tell you guys otherwise!

Check out websitegrader.com. It's not Google proof, but it gives some good factual info to look in to and to work with. I was messing around the other day with key words Roof Cleaning, and your web page kept popping up
http://www.extremecleaningsolutions.biz/ I feel like the site is pretty good now, I need to tweak some keywords in the body of the home page, but at least there is content there now.
