i have been in business for 5months and got some good jobs so far. we go out almost every day and try and talk to property management people but no response yet.is getting a little depressing. tried flyers and mailers maybe a job or 2. dont know if its the economy or what i would think people would want to clean instead of replace.dont know what im doing wrong.
Welcome to the club.. consumer education is very weak and informing them is difficult as many are unaware and sometimes only motivated by a letter from a HOA. Some I have spoke with are very matter of fact and don't find it a pressing issue to address. The only problem with the asphalt roofs is when the valleys of their 13 year old roof needs to be replaced due to rotting of the shingles, but the shingles are in reality in great shape. They opt to replace them and seems money is no object for replacement. I don't get it at all except they just don't understand the long term ramifications of lack of maintenance. Everything else gets taken care of in the home but the roof eh , not as much. Glad we do both! Kim R
Buddy, it takes more than 5 months of being in business to be where you want to be. Expect 3-5 yrs. to build your reputation and customer base in your market.

I hear ya. Im in the same boat. It just takes time to get your business noticed. I didnt have the problem when I started doing contruction/remodeling. I had people calling me so much before I even starting doing business, just because they seen the work I did while I was working for other contractors. I got so many calls I figured why work for someone else, and started doing jobs. Sometimes I wish I still could just wake up, work 8-10hrs and go home with no worries.
Have you tried yard signs on roadsides yet? Thats my next move, Ive been waiting a month for signs to get made.

I suggest you come to tampa for the roundtable, and network with some other roof cleaners, see what they are doing. I am teaching a class on residential roof cleaning sales that may help you ?
But you can get a lot for free at the roundtable, I suggest you attend it.
I opened mine at the end of 2008. We all know what happend then.. Well here it is the middle of 2011 and I'm just starting to get busy. It was really a blessing in disguise for me as I was under equipped at first and didn't have experience. As time went on I got more experience and better equipment. I am just starting to get busy, and by this time next year (if things grow at the same rate) I should be on my way.
I did some freebees at first (Corner houses in a sub division for better exposure) but I got noticed and now it's good. Will show a profit on my sheet this year (If I don't buy any more expensive equipment).

We are in our second year and have seen huge growth compared to the first year. We've already made more in 4 months than we did the entire season last year, and have work every week. Last year I remember going 2 weeks without a single call! It takes times and hard work to build a good reputation both online and in the neighborhoods where you have completed work.
Keep your head up, I think a lot of us felt as you do right now in our first year.
