Electric Compressor

One of my trucks uses a air pump with a 12v back up plumbed in.  The other has only a 12v but I was thinking of adding an air pump.  Was thinking of running a heavy duty electric compressor, maybe like a 15amp unit.  I know there may be times when an electric compressor  may need a few seconds to catch up during a spray.  I see the pros as it being a smaller unit than even the smallest gas pumps, its more reliable, its cheaper to purchase, its in a van so out of the elements, the cons are I would need to run a reel with roughly 150' of cord to plug in plus its ability to keep up.  Just looking for some feedback.

My concern with electric would be the size of wire you will need for a 150' cord. Some compressors do not like long cords. The bigger they are, the more they pull. I have had trouble with that in the past so I always made up the difference with hose, but that was for nail guns. Also, if you plug into a 15 amp circuit, it won't be able to handle the load from the compressor. Home owner gone, home locked, breaker tripped. You're screwed!

They shoot people down here for tripping breakers cry

Or, just get you a small gas generator to run your electric compressor ?

ED, what about a small generator to run it off of if nessacary? I know then why not just a gas comp. but if it;s cheaper and won't have as many problems as the gas at times that you need to use the generator it may be worth it?

Thought about that also Pat. But your right also why go through all that when you can just get a gas compressor. They seem to have some decent 12-13 amp compressor. I do think that is still capable of blowing a fuse. I just think it would be a nicer and more trouble free way of going about it. Hook up a nice little reel with 150' of cord and go. I will not try to invent the wheel.

Just thinking of setting up an Air diagphram too and have an electric comp. as well so no extra cost there and a generator that finally got working after the hurricaine disbelief.

Now I'm thinkin maybe I can run it off the deep cycle marine battery? With a converter of course.

Or would wiring a converter off the car battery be not a good idea or need an upgraded alternator?

That might get spendy Adam.  This inverter can only push 750 watts, but is $300.

You'd definitely want a deep cycle / marine battery to stand up to that type of discharge. Automotive batteries will work for a while, but it drastically shortens their life.

I have a 3000w hydraulic generator on the truck and may look in to Ray Burke's electric pump set up one of these days.  He's the expert on the topic.

Which is why to start off I went w/12v. I don't want to rely on running a cord out of a customers house. Either I buy a gas compressor or hook up my eletric to the generator and have to haul on/off truck. When I get to doing this on a reg basis I'll have to invest in a compact setup (air) or dedicated truck. My current ultra compact 12v setup will do for now.

Your hydraulic generator I assume runs off the homes water supply? If so is it limited by the taps water pressure/flowrate?

It's PTO driven Adam.  It's powered by the truck's engine.

Until you get your hands on an air compressor pressure washer attachment, its hard to fathom just how many practical uses for which this tool can be employed. For instance, for the prep work of stripping old paint and dirt off a house; getting ready to restore the look of an older, faded backyard deck; or for the showroom-clean look sought after when detailing a car, high-pressure cleaning is the way to go. Even comparatively easy jobs like cleaning out roof guttering goes a lot faster when using a pressure washer.
