Dawn As A Roof Cleaning Surfactant ?

In this thread, we are going to examine the use of Dawn Liquid Dish Soap for roof cleaning. First, here is the Dawn MSDS for non Ultra Dawn, lets take a look at what is in this stuff. It appears one of the surfactants is Sodium Laurel Sulfate. Let's check it SH Compatability ?

But First, may want to read this chit ?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate

This inexpensive detergent is commonly used in cosmetic cleansers, hair shampoos, bath and shower gels, bubble baths, etc. - It is probably the most dangerous ingredient used in skin and hair-care products. In the cleaning industry SLS is used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, car-wash soaps, etc. It is very corrosive and readily attacks greasy surfaces.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is used throughout the world for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin.

A study at the University of Georgia Medical College, indicated that SLS penetrated into the eyes as well as brain, heart, liver, etc., and showed long-term retention in the tissues. The study also indicated that SLS penetrated young children's eyes and prevented them from developing properly and caused cataracts to develop In adults.

May cause hair loss by attacking the follicle. Classified as a drug in bubble baths because it eats away skin protection and causes rashes and infection to occur.

Is potentially harmful to skin and hair. Cleans by corrosion. Dries skin by stripping the protective lipids from the surface so it can't effectively regulate moisture.

Another extremely serious problem is the connection of SLS with nitrate contamination. SLS reacts with many types of ingredients used in skin products and forms nitrosomines (nitrates). Nitrates are potential cancer-causing carcinogenics.

Because of the alarming penetrating power of SLS, large amounts of these known carcinogens are absorbed through the skin into the body. A variation of SLS is SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate- SLES). It exhibits many of the same characteristics and is a higher-foaming variation of SLS.

A typical MSDS Data sheet on Sodium Lauryl Sulfate:

Now, from this US Patent, we can safely say Sodium Laurel Sulfate IS Stable, and will not degrade Sodium Hypochlorite. But let's see what ELSE is in Dawn, ok ?

Hypochlorite Distinfectant Stabilized With Calcium Chelant - Patent 4898681

Abstract

Dilute aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution is stabilized against decomposition during storage by incorporating in it a small proportion of the calcium chelate of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. The solution preferably contains by weight at least 95 percent water, from 0.25 to 1 percent sodium hypochlorite, and from 0.005 to 0.25 percent of the calcium chelate. It may be stored for a period of many months and remains effective as a disinfectant for medical environmental surfaces. The solution may also be formulated to contain a synthetic detergent, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, 0.1 to 3 percent, and an alkaline builder, such as sodium metasilicate, to maintain a pH value above 11. Sodium hydroxide may be added to produce a pH above 12.
The other surfactant in Dawn is Alkyl Dimethyl Amine Oxide, and it IS totally compatable with Sodium Hypochlorite!

Alkyl Dimethyl Amine Oxide

Trade NameOXIDET® DMCLD
Chemical NameAlkyl Dimethyl Amine Oxide
Chemical Family
  • Alkyl amine oxides

Now, continuing our education about Dawn, we come to the final ingredient in it, ETHANOL!

From this patent, we can deduce that ETHANOL aids in the penetration of the Sodium Hypochlorite, much as the Isopropyl Alcohol does in the Apple Cider!

Available online 22 March 2005.

Abstract

As a measure of the effect of ethanol on the ability of sodium hypochlorite to penetrate narrow openings such as root canals, mean distances of movement for combinations of these agents were measured in capillary tubes. The addition of ethanol as a surface tension depressant significantly increased the ability of the sodium hypochlorite endodontic irrigant to penetrate in vitro. A freshly mixed solution containing 30 percent ethanol is recommended.

Now, notice the underlined line ?  A freshly mixed solution containing 30 percent ethanol is recommended.
This is because Ethanol like Rubbing Alcohol increases cleaning by increasing penetration time, but also burns your chit up faster!

So, the magic question is IF we should use Dawn, or not ?

It is not as good a thickener as Myrastamine, and the surfactants are only contained in Dawn at from 10 to 30 percent vs pure Myrastamine or Ammonyx. I will have to look up surface tension ratings (surfactant power) of Dawns surfactants vs Ammonyx and Myrastamne, but I think Dawn will lose in a head to head battle with either.

Sure, you can just use more Dawn, but viscosity building is viscosity building, and pretty soon, no matter how much Dawn you add, it will never equal Myrastamine, and maybe Ammonyx as well ?

As you use more Dawn to TRY and equal Myrastamine or Ammonyx, you start equaling or exceeding the cost of either.

So WHERE does this leave Dawn in the scheme of things, as a roof cleaning surfactant ?

It is better then nothing, though it will burn your chit up eventually, as Apple Cider will.

You CAN use it to make Apple Cider, and it's cleaning ability will be enhanced by the addition of some MORE Ethanol or Rubbing Alcohol. You just have to watch out for the fumes (wear a resprator) and be aware the more Ethanol or Isopropyl Alcohol you add, the better it will clean, and the faster your stuff will burn up (go bad).

If you think it is "just as good" as Myrastamine or Ammonyx, you are mistaken.

The makers of Dawn have been under considerable pressure  from Liberals to DECREASE the percentage of Sodium Laurel Sulfate in Dawn with all the bad press it has been getting.

I have been told that the new "Liberal approved" Dawn has less surfactant then the old stuff did.

Only YOU can decide if you want to expose yourself to that chit because you are too cheap or lazy to invest in a drum of Myrastamine.

Sure, it is easy to just go down to Sams or Costco, and pick up a Gallon of Dawn for 10 dollars. But it will take twice as much to clean like Ammonyx or Myrastamine, and it will never have the same viscosity building thickening effect, so dwell time will be decreased compared to Myrastamine.

My Son, who has probably cleaned more Tile roofs then anyone, including me, thinks Dawn is an invitation to slip and  split your head open on a tile roof. He MUCH Prefers Ammonyx or Myrastamine because you use LESS for the same cleaning power, making roofs less slippery.

We softwash with our shingle roof cleaning mix. If we put enough Dawn in it to really make a shingle roof look nice, and get SOME cling, it is a bitch to rinse out of screens, and seems to spot  windows more. With very litle Myrastamine, or a little more Ammonyx, we get great cleaning power, some  thickening, easy to rinse screens, and spot free windows roof cleaning

Time is money guys, and the little bit saved by being cheap or lazy and picking up Dawn locally is lost in wasted time on some jobs.

Sure, we have  used a Dawn mix that sat in our tanks for nearly a week!

There is ony 5 percent ETHANOL in Dawn, unless you dump a bunch in, you will be fine.

But it will burn up the mix faster then SH and water alone.

It is also a great idea to add a little Sodium Metasillicate or TSP when using Dawn to keep the PH up.

See the Patent in the first post.

LOL, now the mix is looking a LOT like Mike Sullivans improved Apple Cider. Mike uses Dawn, Rubbing Alcohol, and TSP in his Improved Apple Cider Roof Cleaning Mix!

I BET thats some wicked chit. It will probably clean up a drug addict no
