Just thought I would put this out there for anyone that encounters this scenario. I received a call last week from a woman that wanted a price on her roof cleaning. She said that her shingle manufacturer was going to pay to have her roof cleaned. I have done warranty roof cleanings before, but it was always a chore to get the job approved and started.

Her roofing manufacturer is Tamko Roofing Products. She got 3 estimates for her roof cleaning. Her first two were from companies that use the modified surface cleaner on the roof. Needless to say, those estimates were outrageous. Knowing that I was bidding against them, I raised my per square foot price and gave her an estimate.

She had to haggle a little with Tamko, but she ended up getting between my price and the outrageous prices from the other two companies. They sent her a payment voucher and we both made out pretty well. I am making very good money on this job and she is going to have some left over that she is going to use to set up a maintenance contract with me.

I have done warranty cleanings before and the customer settled for what the company told them they would give them. This customer pursued it a little further and got the extra money she wanted. The shingle manufacturers try to bully the customers into taking only what they want to pay, but if you work with your customers and they are persistant, it could be a win win for everyone.

Tamko actually gave this woman my number to call for an estimate. They did a Google search and found me that way. It just goes to show that you never know where your next job will come from.
