I mentioned buying links to my father in law who runs an electric business and he said he did that once and Google labeled him as SPAM or something like that. Is it worth it to buy links from a link building company or is it a better idea to build links over time?

I've been spending a ton of time working on the SEO for my website, so I feel comfortable that my "On Page Optimization" is where it should be, but my "Off Page Optimization" is pretty much non-existent, unless we can count merchant circle, hotfrog, facebook, etc?

Basically, the only way someone sees my website is if they search for my business name, or luckily if merchant circle or RCIA comes up with something tying to my business. Like most, when I search, I rarely go further than a few pages, so being on page 50,000,000 doesn't help very much!
