I got a call today from my signs. It turned out to be a pressure washer who thought he could intimidate me. (Dumbazz) When he told me he had a witness (a store clerk) who had seen me pick up one of his signs I said "That never happened, but I will be glad to meet both of you at the store where your witness works in 30 minutes," it was amazing how fast his tune changed. My opinion on bandit signs is live and let live. Additionally, I am not a thief and other peoples signs do not belong to me so I would not touch them. Since I knew I hadn't taken his sign it was enjoyable to let him know I wasn't in the mood to take any sh*t from him or any of his buddies. After he realized I don't run away, we talked a little and he admitted he hated cleaning roofs so I told him to steer them to me & I'd give him a commission. I doubt that'll ever happen, but I'm wrong on a fairly regular basis if you believe my wife. I'm gonna write him a letter, drop some business cards in with it, and mail it to his house, just in case he needs to contact me again. I had purchased 50 signs, put out 10, & 7 are still up. Tommorrow night 35 more are going out!!!
Road signs are illegal in my neck of the woods. I called the county to find out what happens to companies that use these types of signs. I was told the county removes the signs on a regular basis. That seems to happen based on my observatioin of signs going up and coming down within a few days. I was also told that based on the number of signs the county had to remove and the frequency for a particular company they could issue fines.
Given the signs get taken down fairly quickly and the possibility of a fine I decided they would not be cost effective for me.
I tried them on a test basis where the city ends and the county takes over and 7 of 10 stayed up. 1 went down almost immediately on the Saturday I put them out, so I think a roofer or a competitor took it. They don't seem to be working very well, but I still have lots to learn. I put them in an area where there are other signs, but at different intersections. Hopefully I'll get it figured out soon.
I have never put signs out unless they are at a job we did. I have seen them in some interesting places that are hard to get back down, but never had the time to give it a shot. I think a sales guy is going to be finding himself setting these up once a month.
We have used pull tab bulletins with some success. The kind you hang at the grocery and liquor store.
This is probably the first time I put some ad work on the forum:

Thanks for the pull tab tip Bill. I used to see them on pay phones for rental "company." I never would have thought to use them to sell roof cleaning. BTW pay phones are often located near the tank fill area at gas stations. I used to drive gasoline tankers, not hang out around pay phones.
Good luck with that Art, I have to deal with the city of Virginia Beach on that one, they threaten to slap you with a 1000.00 fine if you have signs up on city property. I have put some in areas going into housing developments but they get taken down so quick.
I had a heating and air conditioning guy call me a year or so ago and talk shitz on my phone and left me a really rude message just because I had signs up in the area. I called him back and tried to be polite but ended up me losing my temper with the gentlemen and said I would gladly meet you on the corner at the miller mart where you removed the sign and we can talk in person and see how much shitz you talk then. Of course he hung up and wouldn't answer the phone again. I called his office and told the management if he calls my business line again talking that way, the next call would be from a lawyer friend of mine that was in my BNI group. His ballon got deflated very quickly.
I use bandit signs all the time, as a matter fact this was my best advertisement when i started 2 yrs ago, i still have signs that have been in the same spot for over a year. they have paid for them selves many times over Art. I drill 2 holes in the middle of the sign then hang them on a telephone pole around upscale neighbor hoods with cable ties, work excellent, went thru 100 of then in 2 yrs so im working on a new for this yr... best of luck Art
