Roof cleaning is discussed by home inspectors and they might be another point of contact for refferals. But there is one guy ( the Editor) in this forum that does not like us very well, Don't understand why, but maybe we can gain some alliance with them in some way.
Here is an excerpt that is sure to piss well everyone, BUT, we need to understand, what is his problem with roof cleaners? and maybe to turn this attitude into a positive one, which can bring a possible alliance with the inspection industry.

Or maybe I could be wrong about that industry?confuse

"Still convinced the stuff (algae) does damage roof covers.
( they agree it does damage roofs)

Bill, for the record, I hate roof cleaning companies. (why) If I were King of the Planet, the state would issue home inspectors seasonal hunting licenses and allow them to thin out the roof cleaner herd once a year. Every inspector would have a 2-kill limit. Inspectors would be lauded as heroes for doing a service to humanity. devil_125.gif "
( is this attitude costing us clients? )

ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!

Kim (or Randy?) - can I have the name of this forum or the URL please?  I promise to be good.

As an aside, this guy is likely a one-off.  I had a home inspector call me over the summer all kinds of excited about what we do.  He was unaware  that the service existed until he saw my ad in the paper and called me.  I haven't received any business from him like he mentioned, but it was a positive discussion in general none the less.

BTW - we have at least one RCIA Premium member that I'm aware of that is/was a home inspector.  Perhaps he'll have some insight

That guy hates us cause we make a lot more money than he does, and in less time  roof cleaning

As a licensed home inspector myself I have no clue what this jacka$$es problem is. In fact I take offense to his acting like we're animals. I'd love to see the URL too and likewise I'll behave I promise!

Hey Ted,
It is Kim and I really wanted to find out if this industry could serve as an ally to us roof cleaners for adding to business prospects.
I added this comment because I was not sure if this is their industry standard. I will send him a response and see if I can get an understanding of his negative attitude. I do not seek to raise bad vibes here and hope I am not doing so. As some inspectors agree that damage does occur on roof systems as well as people having problems getting insurance because of roofs condition. I feel that the more unification from various other professionals it will make us a stronger profession and more respected if we can gain support from other industry's.

Chris M - you've got a great attitude!

Side bar -  a friend and neighbor returned from a family trip to FL recently and came to see me right afterwards.  He said Ted, travelling through SC, I've never seen so many dirty roofs.  You should spend your winters there.  If only I could convince the Warden.   You must be in the Catbird seat as they'd say back home.  Whatever that means.  I know it's good?  wink.gif

Ah-ha!  I found it.  If I may Kim (or Randy)?  This is the initial post that set the stage.   Mr. Home Inspector missed the hideous STAINS on the roof and looks foolish as a result.   Elitist bastage....

I got a call that a buyer's insurance company has stated that the "mold" on the roof has to be removed or the insurance policy is canceled. The buyer has moved in and wants to know why I didn't know that their insurance company would require this.

Has anyone else heard of this insurance requirement?

Do you guys just report on the stains or do you recommend cleaning/removal, or what?

Would anyone wish to share their verbiage about algae stains on roofs?

Ted while you are reading through this , ck out some of the other articles by searching roof cleaning there, it is a big part of their process and I think insight on all levels helps us in the end.
Even the bad ones. I try to look at both sides of the coin.

A couple of Jersey home inspectors, a Bucks County PA inspector, all stirring the pot so to speak.  I think we can take 'em  wink.gif

Seriously, let's all lay low, and if anyone decides that reaching out is the right thing, then it should be Chris.  Agreed?

One of the guys is fairly knowledgeable....

It's all good Kim.  No negative vibe, just a lesson needed for someone  wink.gif  I'll look around some more as you've suggested, but truly suspect this to be an isolated group of grumpy inspectors.  I guess it's my nature - I'm a really good friend, and a vindictive, nasty and mean SOB of an enemy - directed at them of course  wink.gif

If anyone can make peace and win them over, it's YOU.  I should have thought about that before.

If there's room, give me a year and a half to get the youngest one off to college.  Then I can be a semi snow bird, or a half back....  Hell, I've lived in FL, so I can't be called either of those I don't think?  SC is super nice..  I truly would like to head south for the winter.  I despise winter since I quite skiing and hunting.

Been following this post. I to would like to know if there is some requiement of roof cleaning for insurance purposes. I am going to contact my insurance agent and get his feedback.

This is a good point to consider in our process if it has legs?

I went on 3 different home inspection forums this morning and searched "roof cleaning". I was totally surprised at the lack of knowledge and total ignorance these people have regarding what the black streaks are and the damage that is being done. I think there is a huge challange there for The roof cleaning industry to educate these people, which will spill over to the HO public thru them.
Something for us to think about as a group effort. There is power in numbers.

I sat here thinking why that guy would post that about us. I've come up with two possible conclusions:
1. At some point he crossed a roof cleaner using high pressure and damaging shingles.
2. A clean roof makes his job more difficult doing the roof inspection. Hail damage etc is A LOT easier to spot on a roof covered in algae as opposed to a clean roof. I truly think he's pissed because we make him actually put down the binoculars and physically climb the roof.

I probably inspect 4-5 roofs a week on behalf of home buyers and nearly every single one of the reports from the mortgage companies inspector says "roof observed from ladder and ground utilizing high powered magnification (binoculars)

138394, Gary thanks for helping me get the point across a little better. I think in accessing and educating other professional fields it can be a great benefit in raising the bar for us to be treated as true professionals.
We need to target larger associations, any one think of some other areas that might benefit from RCIA?
One other point I did notice is they are very strict in using terminology and the liability in diagnosing the roof critters. The web site I was viewing had some enlighting issues that might benefit the roof cleaning industry as well.
