Just wanted to share a little story. A couple nights ago we had sewage pump in the basement jam up and overflow. You can only amagine the smellashamed
Anyway I decided to use some sh and dawn to see if I could clean up the mess and it worked like a charm!!! With in minutes I couldn't smell a thing! Maybe there is a new market for this stuff. 24 hour emergency clean ups??

Did you have any of the green apple fragrance? I cleaned an elderly lady's roof one day and met the daughter upon completion. Long story short her mother had a few cats that " sprayed " making the house smell kinda bad,she said she would sure love to have " that Cleaning smell " in the house. I gave her some green apple in a coffee can told her to mix with water and spray the " soiled " areas,She called the next day saying it worked wonderfully.

Thats something to think about. Sewage is not a good smell & neither is cat pee...did the fumes get to ya at all? Or was is just better smelling anything but sewage?

Make sure you clean that area with some simple green Mike. Seawge is nasty stuff. Smell might have gone but bacteria can stick around. SH and Dawn is not a sufficient sewage cleanup solution indoors.

Actually no Will the smell of the SH must have been diluted enough with the Dawn that it didn't bother us. Thanks Jerry I wasn't sure. Bacteria is nothing to play with. I've seen people go into comas and almost die with bacterial infections. Only a couple things in this world that scare me. Skunks, snakes, deadly germs, ghost, and my fiance when shes mad!

AAhhhhh....Sewage...... the sweet smell of money! Yeah I used to get those service calls and you can smell it outside. It was like "ChiChinG". But when we were done we would take 2 or 3 gallons of store bleach and just sweep it in. It always did the job.

Now I am not to handy but you may appreciate this. In my basement the " main line " had a rubber piece on it that joined the pipe. I noticed it leaking and tightening the clamps didn't help so I had to replace it. I was getting ready to put the new rubber piece on when my kids came home from school. I said they could use the bathroom but JUST DON'T FLUSH! So you know it..there I am trying to slide the rubber cup on when one of them flushed! One flush was a nightmare I couldn't imagine cleaning up more then that or doing it often like a plumber. I should have called a plumber!

Nice! I'm sure you were in an unfinished basement but I used to do some testing for jobs like this, and one of the reasons we said do not use bleach (indoors) is that the active cleaner (SH) usually is gone before the water in the bleach is. And if you basically are leaving water all over you are helping a mold problem or any other bacterial or micro. growth that is present get started on the drywall. Ofcourse we weren't talking about 12% SH and dawn, but you do want to use a good degreaser to get rid of that stuff.
Point is dry it out and you are golden.

According to the CDC a solution of 6%-10% bleach kills just about anything including HIV and H1n1 so.....

But I agree completely with the rest of the statement. You need to get that properly cleaned and dried and don't take any chances.

ouch. I did that to a plumber on a job in philly once. I had no idea he was working on the main line and i had to go so i flushed when i was done and i heard him screaming from 3 stories up. It was pretty funny now that i look back on it, hell it was super funny when it happened. I was 20 yrs old it was great. i felt bad for the guy and got him a coffee to match his shirt.

I hear ya..like I said there are many reasons not to use it in this situation but the most important would be that sewage waste has many acids and urine has ammonia which can create Chlorine gas when mixed with SH.

I know you were just quoting the CDC.
We can start a whole debate aboute how Chlorine bleach alone does not kill 100 % of everything........

True, no argument here.
I was just thinking that given the circumstances it wasn't a "bad" idea for the night.

But I totally agree that no chances should be taken and you gotta get that stuff cleaned up right.
