Got a call for a quote from a HO in an enclave of custom high end homes (McMansions) just west of me. I'd been looking forward to getting a job there for the visibility, as many of those otherwise gorgeous homes have ugly a$$ shingles.
The mature lady and I had a good chat on the phone, and I arrived promptly, all the while thinking strategically to ensure I landed the deal without selling myself (nor our industry) short. Some particulars:
5K square foot home per Zillow which I'd checked before.
North side, especially over the garage was hideous - algae and severe lichens.
Due to the lay out, I could treat the entire effected area from the bucket truck. Piece of cake.
This was going to be an easy win, AND get me busy in that neighborhood...... or so I'd thought.........
On the phone she'd tipped her hand that she already had 2 quotes. I figured one would be from the "Shampoo Zoo Crew" with their zillion dollar estimates which would work in my favor. 'Specially since I arrive armed with documentation clearly stating no high pressure to be used (ARMA and GAF-Elk), not even supposed "calibrated" whirly gig roof thingies.
The other was a wild card, but I assumed the other real deal (RCIA) guy that's not too far away was likely the other player. I figured he might be tough to beat, as he's been at this longer than I, I read his posts and respect was he has to say.
Could it be, it was going to come down to me and 'him'? Gulp.. **queue Western shoot out music ala Clint Eastwood**
After my pitch including a specific or two about her roof, and mention of a freebie in advance, presenting license and insurance information proactively as I always do, before and after pictures of other homes recently done etc, I presented her my quote on some fine looking letterhead, with my guarantees clearly spelled out to boot.
The sweet, mature lady who'd been so soft spoken all of a sudden spoke with this hellish like voice as she roared - You're not even in the ball park! She went on to say that she had a quote for $99!
I couldn't believe it. I politely inferred that at a cost so low, it could only be a guy with a pressure washer, and warned her the best I could. Meanwhile the she-monster from hell continued to glare at me like I was mad man. With a 'please ma'am, ensure you do proper research before moving forward', I beat feet to the truck to lick my wounds on the ride home LOL..
I was only out about 40 minutes total for my time - simply the cost of doing business, so really no biggie, although I REALLY wanted to have a presence there. It's amazing how someone who lives in a 750K home could be so foolish about taking care of it.
On the bright side, excluding the crazy she-devil lady in the McMansion with a filthy roof, I've landed ALL other sales call this week! Battin' a thousand thanks to presenting facts. Facts learned right here from the fine folks of the RCIA. And I'd never sold a thing in my life 'cept for some nasty pizza kits as High School fundraiser.
I have a very busy and prosperous weekend ahead Yet a long row to hoe to educate the customer base around here. All in good time, right?
Just downloaded pictures from today's jobs and thought I'd share a pic of the home in question taken a couple days ago. Incredible..... (Beautiful home, but an ugly a$$ roof!) $99?! What the heck LOL.
In all seriousness, educating the client base - at least in areas such as Northern Virginia, is the number one priority for industry growth. To me it is anyway.
As an aside (and only writing this as it's "in the shade" and password protected) I'm getting fairly quick at this profession. Almost feeling guilty about how fast we're completing jobs while paying incredible attention to detail.
The RCIA Rocks....... Hmmmmm.... Washington DC round table one of these days maybe?
Buyers are often liars. You did right by walking away. I mess back with them when they pull this chit on me. I tell them to go ahead and take the 99 dollar quote, because they can't afford me!

Well said Chris,it is a good thing I dont deal with sales, no patience, Randy can tolerate that, me I would have sprayed her with some sauce.
I am going to make sure people do not get a misconception on my pricing in my advertising, that way I can weed out the BS ahead of time, would rather be fishing , then laying out a speech to someone that thinks they are shopping at Walmart. People like that may be able to be swayed but usually not. But then again I dont do sales probably a good thing

You can't blame them for trying Kim ? Everyone wants a Mercedes for the price of a Kia. We find THE most important thing in sales is making friends with them. It takes time to sell a roof cleaning job. Don't underestimate yourself. You are a likeable person like Randy, just in a different way. If you look at a customer call as a chance to make a new friend, I bet sales will happen for you. None of us came out of Mom selling roof cleaning. We all had to learn.
