Did my first paying job today........was going better than I thought it would. I applied all the knowledge i got her to my job.
As i was giving love to my first roof, all the things were going thru my mind, water...water..water..spread the love bottom to top...everything is covered...bagged...smooth as silk, i had 3/4 of the roof applied in about 30 min (2100sq ft) then it happened......
I heard "are you trying to kill me?" the overweight 65+ next door neighbor was on the ground hollaring at my ground help.......Off the roof i came..pulling my gloves off and approaching the gentlman (nicely) asking if there was a problem....thats when he threw out the bombshell...."if you dont stop spraying that stuff, i will sue! I have asthma and your going to kill me." I told the man that he should probably be indoors at this point if he has issues with the smell. He then stated, i dont go outside often and he will do what he wants.....etc...etc...

My customer tried speaking to him and asked him what she was to do cause the roof needed cleaned. She tried her damndest to reason with him. I even offered to pay for a hotel room for him and his wife if the odor was that bad. It was a shot in the dark! Nope!
My customer then went with him to his house, all along we were stalled on the job because of the A*& next door. When my cusomer came back, she wanted the roof pressure washed instead...I told her no, she wanted another product used, i told her that if she could find someone to do the job with other chem, then she could. I refused. I explained that this process is what is recomd by roofing manufacturers and what is taught here on this site......and this site is where she found me. I asked her why would I ever go against my standards, or RCIA?

3/4 of the home is done and we are waiting for the AS* next door to go out of town til we finish the job. She was so impressed with my effort in helping her with her AS* next door, and houe the roof looked.....the house wash and the driveway cleaning that she paid in full and tipped my 2 ground guys $20 each. She did say that she would refer us in a heart beat.

What would you do? I wanted to call an ambulance then drop the old fuc&*R, but I didnt. He was good conversation on the way home!!

I educated my customer, and apparently I need to do the same with old irrate neighbors.

Let me know if you ever had this issue and what you did....

I did give the print out from the ARMA to show that this is what is recommended, and gave it to the customer in front of the old man. Any other procedure could do great danger to her roof.

As soon as I can I will post pics.....gotta take the family bowling tonight.

By the way....after all that, i couldnt wait to post this!! Thanks guys for all the posts..I help me get my customer and make her happy (even with an as* next door) I didnt clear alot on this job but I will contribute some $$ soon to help others learn as well...

Thanks Chris for pointing me towards this site...your a good man...take care Bro!

Dwayne,

Thought you handled it quite well. The homeowner was really happy and I would say impressed that you were a professional in every aspect of the job. Doing everything you could to placate the grumbling neighbor. I am sure he has even complained about her if she gets her lawn cut to early.

The situation gives us all a thought to have a little floramask handy, instead of gassing him with the SH cleaning smell, you could of done it with a little Green Apple or Rose. Then the response could have been, I'm sorry Sir that the green apple smell is so strong today, they were just pressed for their juice this morning, you see we really need fresh cleaning solution and apple juice to do our job professionally. Then he could have went home complaining that Tropicanna or Nestle Juice was smelling up the neighborhood.

In all seriousness, that you for the great teaching point and your professionalism in handling a very delicate situation.

Tough first job. Luckily, 99% of the jobs will go much smoother than that, I'm sure.

Like Fred said, you handled it great. Same as I would.

Using anything less (weaker chemicals and a pressure washer), without any proof or evidence from shingle manufacturers or the RCIA is only going to make you look like a hack who has no idea what they are doing.

Hope you were using a good chlorine mask. Maybe offering a mask to the complaining neighbor might help. But that guy probably would have turned it down, because he's such an az*! LOL!

I see now. That was a silly old man, I am sure he is fine. We have warned older customers of the smell that may come in the ridge vents. We have had customers with Asthma and they were fine, it did not kill them, lol. It is definitely something to consider when doing apartment complexes and should go out in the letter to the renters. You handled it well and that old guy has probably been a pain in the azz all his life.
