Here is something interesting but  mostly useless information. In the past we were experimenting with Calcium Hypochlorite; aka pool shock . My determination was,.. it will clean a roof,...but it's messy and dries with a white film on anything it lands on, and also needs rinsed,... so the trade off wasn't worth it. You just can't beat SH when it comes to roof cleaning. But the interesting things I can now say are so,....they are lasting longer than the roofs done with SH.  Thats just my observation, nothing scientific. But typically roofs I've done with Sh begin coming back at the 3-4 year mark,.. But there are 5 roofs I did with CH about 6 years ago, and they still look good.

Also, last Fall I sprayed a friends roof with CH and just let it sit with no rinsing, didn't seem to do a lot,..was pretty cool out that day. But interestingly enough, I recently noticed the spots I sprayed are completely clean,...I can't believe how it seemed to work as a time release chemical.  I think this is the idea behind copper sulfate as well.

Not really good for us because we are selling a clean roof, customers don't want an unchanged roof when they write the check.  But it's interesting none the less.

Jeff

No, the purpose of the post was just general information. CH has to many setbacks to make it worth any extra charge. I will continue to use SH and will probably never mix up another batch of Ch for roof cleaning. Copper sulphate works also, but not for our purposes. I am not telling anyone to use Ch,....it's a big pain.

Calcium Hypo has a lot of availiable Chlorine, and is not as water soluble.
So it stays on roof longer, and kills Algae better.
It does not clean as well, but kills better.
This is because it has more disinfecting, not cleaning capabilities then SH.

I know this may sound stupid, but I have always wondered why Rock Salt could not be used to clean roofs ?
We used Rock Salt to kill bushes up north.
Heck, Round UP or any vegatation killer should work, if you have the time.
Out west, zinc sulfate is uused to kill moss.

What about putting a small amount of CH in the SH mix as a preventative?

Calcium Hypochlorite has a very high chlorine content but as you said leaves a white calcium deposit that is hard to remove

Di-chlor (sodium dichloro-isocyanurate) has around 35% available chlorine, dissolves fast in water, dose not contain calcium, is PH neutral and is VERY EFFECTIVE and is easy to handle due to being a powder, although more expensive then SH it is a powdered concentrate (you are not paying for water) and you do not need to put much in the mix to get the right chlorine content. I have tried Di-chlor and in my opinion it works. Di-chlor also contains a stabilizer that stops the sun from degrading the chlorine as fast, so it remains active for a lot longer, meaning it dose it's work for a longer period

Calcium Hypochlorite  leaves calcium deposits, if you mix it in a bucket then empty the bucket when it dries the inside of the bucket is coated in a white calcium film requiring an acid to remove. (phosphoric acid)

Hey I have a good idea, I am well aware that no matter what H2O is the way to do it but how about a filter for the gutters? A sediment filter should work I think. Just had my brain going and thought I'd share.

I am all for using what works, works fast and gives results that you can see that day when they are writing the check.

I am the same way, if something takes months to work then I would be writing a check when I see results, not writing a check on promises, too many people been burned with contractors needing money upfront for supplies then never returning to do the job so I would not want to be in any similar thoughts as those con-men that rip off customers. That is why I use the mix that I do and the customer has a clean roof before I tell them that I am done with the job.

Just my opinion.

I have talked about treatments every 1.5 to 2 years and so far nobody is interested and that is ok, they can have the whole roof cleaned again when it is time, maybe then they will put more thought into the treatments for less money.

Just thought I'd revive this thread,..so those who think I was just making trouble against AC can see that a few of us had CH figured out a long time ago,..the Australian guy also mentions a white calcium deposit that is hard to remove. wonder what ever happened to him,..his posts were interesting.

See, a little research on the RCIA could have saved some of you from this guy.

I did a roof last year and the next door neighbor had placed powder pool shock on the roof. I went over when he was done and spoke to him.It looked like baby powder from a distance, and I have to admitt it looked kinda trashy. You couldn't compare the instant results from the home I cleaned.I hope I get some work near there this year so I can see what happened.

I was wondering the same thing. I remember reading about Calcium when I first came on here and have never considered using it. There are other things that work well, just a matter of experimenting.

Not sure why the big thing to re invent the wheel?
