I'm bidding this roof this afternoon.  Overall I think the roof is in pretty good shape.  The North side (Left side) is starting to grow algae, but the homeowner is most concerned w/ the large rust stain on the back side.  From what I've read on here - Super Iron Out is a pretty good product to remove the rust stain.  Does everyone still agree w/ this or has anyone had better success w/ another product?

My thoughts are to bid this job at a standard minimum price to just remove the rust stain and an additional line item to go ahead and clean the entire roof.  If the customer decides to have the entire roof cleaned, are there any tips on whether I should apply the rust remover or the Love first?  Does the order of application make a difference?

Zeke, Pre wet that rust stain. Mix up some Super Iron out and or oxalic acid and apply it to the rust stain. Rinse it real good once the rust stain is gone before you spray it with Love. The two don't go together. You could also do the roof first and then the rust spot. It doesn't matter which order. Just make sure you rinse that area first before applying either mixtures. Hope this helps. And yes...I've run into this before and it worked. You will have a Happy Customer. Good Luck!

I would clean the area first.
I have used Super Iorn Out, but, not on a roof. Yet
I have some Safe Restore that works well.
Upsell the stain removal. Maybe a maintenance follow up.

Andy - is Safe Restore also a product that can be found at Home Depot or Lowe's?

No. Safe Restore can be purchased from EacoChem. Call and talk to Mike.

Hey does anybody ever run into paint stains on shingles?

I am not talking about splattered paint on shingles.

I have a job shceduled and the lady has white stains on her shingles that are a bit more pronounced than usual. I am sure everybody has seen this from shutters oxidizing but this is a lower roof that is basically covered with white stains. You can tell it is paint that has run off over time from the siding.

I want to approach with caution. Any thoughts?

more than likely it is Oxidation like you said. Add some butyl based sodium hydroxide to your mix or just spray some in the affected areas. This SHOULD remove it the next time it rains. You may also want to apply it, let it dwell and the see if you can rinse it off with a garden hose for more of an immediate rusult.

The rust is also running down the fascia below the window.  Are both Super Iron Out and Safe Restore safe to apply to the wall?  Should they be applied same strength as they are applied to the shingles?

Thanks Larry.
Just so I get your recommendation right here:
  • try hitting it with straight SHD in a test area
  • try adding some to the mix itself and treat entire roof with it.
I really apprreciate the info, I am a bit uneasy about this one so this definitely helps. I have a few more q's.
  • its asbestos tile siding that this white chalky film is coming from. I doubt there are any chemical sensitivities to worry about because asbestos is a very stable material. But I am no chemist nor have I run into a roof with them near yet, except this one.
  • Is there anything I should be weeary of at all with using the SHD and what % is appropriate?
Thanks again for the help.
