chemicals question?

Hello all!I've been wanting to get into the roof cleaning biz.I want to use a biodegradeable type chemical and have looked at Spray nForget,Roof Be Clean, and Roof-Reviver.I DEF. don't want to waste my money, customer's time, nor mine on a product that don't work or have to come back every 6mths!Now I see here, that it seems to be better to make your own.Is this true?I'm also wanting one that I can rinse off at least within a day of appying the cleaner. Is there anyone with a recipe to share and not be worried about it killing plants or animals?BTW,anyone that's used any of the before-mentioned products,I'd love to get some feedbacks on your experience with them before I buy. Thanks to all the info and help you can provide

I have never used any of the over the counter products.  I will tell you that any product that claims to not harm your landscaping plants will not work on removing the black stains on your roof.  Think about it..  The algae and moss and linchen growing on your roof is a living plant.  If the cleaning solution won't kill your bushes it won't kill the algae on your roof.  I see your new to our forum.  May I suggest you spend a few hours and read these post.  You can learn a lot from this forum.

Welcome to RCIA my friend!
Listen to what Toledo Roof Cleaning Said.
That is a plant living on your roof, it must be Killed.
Or, it will come right back, like cutting a weed w/o killing it's roots!
Read my friend, use the search, this is the largest amount of roof cleaning knowledge ever assembled, in one place.

I believe it is the product roof reviver that you can view a video on youtube. If you view the videos, you will notice a scene where the customer says how great his roof came out.....if you look its still has black algae all over it, I can't believe they put it out there like that. I will try to find the video and post it.

And, this plant growing on your roof spreads itself by invisible air borne spores, like a dandelion weed.
Pressure washing merely spreads these spores around your home, to re grow all over your siding, dway, etc, etc.

Yes,I agree, now that ya'll put it like you did it makes complete sense! If it can kill growing algea, then you'll have problems with the plants(living organism).I seen the Apple recipe for shingle roofs.I like that, but how to I protect customer's plants and animals?I'm sure we ALL know how protective women can be over their plants and flowers. Thanks again already for the help ya'll have already given. And I will continue in searching on here .

Here is the video I mentioned. Look at the 1:23 mark on the tape, the guys in his rear yard saying how great the roof came out. Look at the roof right behind him,is it me or is it loaded with black algae? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9Bf3psi7jM

Hey Guys,
New to the roof cleaning business, getting the final touches done to my rig this week.  Been reading up on several searches on the forum.  Thanks for all the great information on rig set-up, sauce mixes and techniques.  How serious is it if you get the sauce on your skin?  Read many threads and viewed many pics and we see many guys wearing shorts and t shirts with sneakers,  Is this the best clothing or should protective clothing be worn?

After you get it on you the first time, you will learn to appreciate protective clothing, especially gloves. I still have sores on my hands from 2 months ago. Live and learn.

Looks too uneven to be wet, looks liek algae to me. Besides, the whole premise of the video is how well it worked ( past tense), and that it was applied over a month ago, therefore the "wet" idea doesn't work( most likely the chemical doesn't either).

Matt:

For years I've just used a SH, soap, and water approach. I am trying to change that as I become more educated here on this forum.  When I was 30 I used to spray roofs in shorts, the splash  from the chemical at 30-35% will burn, but I've never had any long lasting scars (after one day of repeated roof cleaning my legs were pretty raw).

As I've gotten older I have learned to take more precautions. I wear jeans, since they can handle roof rub better than khakis, and wear I a tshirt and  a long sleeve polyester bend jersey. I switched my footwear to rubber boots (black or white), but I hate trying to climb steep pitched roofs in those things.  To me the worst burns are a hot love dipping down in your shoes and sitting there for 30 mintues.  I do try and wear clear wrap style safety glasses and rubber chem gloves, but in all honesty sometimes in my zest to work, I may not wear these devices 100% of the time (but I should).

After 10 years of on and off cleaning, what scares me the most is the LONG TERM exposure to this stuff.  I wish I had taken better care in the beginning. I'll probably never be the guy a white one piece chem-suit, but I m trying to be more careful!  Do do wear respirators when cleaning pool cages and closed in areas!
