Yep, You can damage those composition shingles when it is hot. I have walked on roofs for 35 years now. And I learned to walk not heel to toe or toe to heel on a roof at all times but flat foot to flat foot. You keep full surface of your foot on the roof and don't twist your foot either it will smudge it as well. It acts basically like hot asphalt on the road when hot but on a slant/Pitch. Take slow man.

With our NON-PRESSURE ROOF CLEANING methods and equipment you don't really need to put a foot on the roof you can always spray the roof from your ladder. and yes!! stay away from walking on the roof when cleaning if temperture is that high!!

I would recomend staying off the roof at those temps. On a heavily stained roof there may be damage not visible until the algae is removed. If you never went on the roof you can not be blamed for the damage ! As any experienced roofer can tell you, you could make a mess, the lighter the shingle the more visible the damage. Use caution.

I have alot of roofing experience, and when the shingles start melting under my feet and leaving tracks I break out the cougar paws.  http://www.cougarpaws.com/ they have a pad on the underside that is held in place by a hook and loop system, they are great for keeping the roof free of track marks and have unbelievable traction.

Great Post Barry 138394,

Boat Deck Shoes have soft soles. I like soft soles cause yu can feel the loss of traction better, They last less long, but hard soles are to be avoided, IMHO. Hard Soles give way with no warning, and you find yourself on yer azz far too often!
Nice to see you posting buddy! Roofers make great roof cleaners!

For me if its hot enough to scar the shingles its about too dang hot to be cleaning a roof anyways!

I try to shoot most of them from the edge too. Only get up there when its a must.

I have seen these couger paws before, do they work very well Barry?
I wonder, they look just like wader boots...... I will have to see if my fly fishing soles work on the old roof.
I have done quite a bit of roof laboring in college and during thos hot days if you messed up the shingle you have to replace it was the rule and you get soft feet real quick!

Foam pads help to hold your things or to kneel on. They work very well. Just like the foam in a car seat cushion. I wouldnt wear them as shoes though. lol.

Barry those cougarpaws look like leather shoes to me correct? if so their not going to hold up to the cleaners we use. They will be destroyed quickly.

I have been walking on roofs for over 30 years but only cleaning them for over 6 years now.

I grew up trimming trees and clearing roof lines so it was always necessary to be up on roofs to trim the trees.

Over all those years I always used regular tennis shoes and on the Hot South Texas days, I have never seen any damage to the asphalt shingles no matter how hot it was outside. During the summer time, it stays in the 90's in the nite time. We have our share of 100+ degree days every year. Last year we had over 70 days in a row that were over 95 degrees outside and in that time many days were easily over 100.

I think that it is probably the older roofs that are letting go of the granules, not the roofs that are in good shape.

I know for a fact that you can damage a white shingle by walking on it on a hot day, if you start slipping, twisting, turning, and digging in, you can mark it up.

I would suggest misting it down with water, but I suppose it would be hot again in moments. Just becareful if you notice you marking it up quit.
