I'm not sure how to post a poll. So I was just wondering how many of you guys actually walk the ridge of the roof and spray down and how many stay on the ladder at the eaves and spray from the top down? Thanks I have been spraying from the ladder in most cases.
i walk the whole roof not just the ridges i just find it to be faster and easier in most cases. and if it looks clean when your rite on top of it,you know it will look clean from the ground

Unless it is mandatory that you walk a roof, why would you put yourself in the added danger of falling, and also the threat of damaging a HO's roof and causing a leak? Especially this time of year, shingles tend to become somewhat brittle and are easily damaged. My thoughts, for what their worth, Stay off the roof unless absolutely necessary. JMHO
I walk the roof when it is easily walkable. I think you can control the spray much easier, use less chemical and get the job done much faster. I won't do anything that will make me feel uncomfortable on a roof, but If I can walk it I will.

I used to do quite a bit of roofing, so most cases I will walk it. It's a whole lot easier ad you can get a nice even coat making less chances to go back and spot clean. If it's cold enough outside to make the shingles brittle and easily damaged I most likely won't be cleaning on that day. If I can't walk it or it's not quite sprayable from a ladder I'll rent a lift. This a very safe and add it into the cost with a little extra for gas and hauling and it's FREE.

90% of the cleanings and preventative maintenance treatments we do are done from the roof. 12.4 and 12.6 are easily walkable. As long as you keep your head in the game. Steeper roofs are shot from the ground or ladder. I'm not saying that you can get up there and swing dance, but in the 20 years I've been in business, we have never damaged a roof. Actually, walking it allows us to inspect it for imperfections. One that comes to mind, is we found 2 bullet holes in a roof which we would never have discovered if we weren't on the roof. The homeowner has the comfort of knowing we inspect the roof for what we feel are imperfaections and pass it on to them as we are not roofers.
Again, this is how we do it and is not a recommendation for anyone. It justs works better for us.
We walk roofs as little as possible. On Tile roofs we really limit our travel to what is absolutely essential, to avoid cracking any. Steep roofs are done from a ladder.

Yes, But is walking all over your customers roof good for their shingles? My answer is no, it is not, Anytime I can stay off their shingles is a sales advantage to me. We don't walk on your shingles and ruin them, Do you understand what I'm saying?
Why walk roofs when you can spray from the ground or ladder?
If you have never fallen from a roof then you don't or can't yet see the benefits I speak of from experience but if you do this thing called "roof cleaning" long enough, for enough seasons, you play and you will eventually pay?
Better safe than sorry from my prospective.
Young Bucks have at it.
Old dogs will walk away while you, for the moment win the day.
Yet, every seasoned roof cleaner has slip-slidin' stories that will make the hair stand up on the back of most he-mens necks.
Rib breakin' Neck crackin' Back breakin, out of work joy rides to the E.R.
No thank you.
For me, the CLOSER to the ground, the better.
I and anyone I work with do take time with every roof we clean so it turns out 100% close to new looking almost everytime.
In my book we already get paid pretty well per hour, even if you are a SLOW roof cleaner, so, why push it?
For us, using pumps that are made to shoot 40-50 feet or more at 10gpm-14gpm can deliver flow almost anywhere, in most cases, without having to step foot on a roof.
Its all about control and nozzle selection.
We use a selection of Air Diaphragms, Fatboys, Zeta 40s, combinations? LOL depending on the job.
The right equipment is key. If this is your bread and butter, safety and equipment from my experience, takes no shortcuts?
i will some what agree i havent come acrost a shingle roof yet i couldn't clean from a ladder but barrel tile is a whole nother store very few tile roofs iv'e done could be shot from a ladder with three side to each tile there is just no way to get a angle on them from a ladder so i walk every one just to make sure nothing was mised

We spray from the ladder when possible. Safety First. Although, I think it's a great idea to inspect the customer's roof for them and that would be best performed up on the roof. Maybe a good idea to ask the customer if they would like you to get up on the roof and inspect it for them but actually do the spraying from the ladder? Walking a wet roof just scares me (and I've been skydiving multiple times). Just some thoughts.
Untill we get better equipment, we walk 'em! Free inspection of the roof n all. If its too steep for me, My helper walks them. he was a roofer before Gutterdogs!
