Grease On Shingles At A Restaurant
Permalink

I cleaned the roof on a restaurant the other day and found a spot behind one of the exhaust hood vents that had a large pathway of grease on the shingles. The grease was pretty thick and looked like it had been coming out for quite a while.

I didn't see this spot before we went to do the work so I didn't bring anything to try to remove that grease. Has anyone had any experience with this type of thing? I was going to try some heavy duty degreaser like Purple Power, Simple Green or a floor/engine degreaser that I used to use when I had my auto repair business.

Just curious of your thoughts. Thanks.

Brian

the grease on the roof would be from the kitchen exhaust system, and that particular type of grease would be from the cooking. I believe their is different types of cleaner for that oppose to mechanical grease.

Brian, if you hit it with a butyl based sodium hydroxide, let it dwell and them rinse it off with low Pressure you should be able to remove it from the Roof.

Thanks as always Larry. I think I have some Krud Kutter in the garage. If I remember correctly, it is butyl and sodium hydroxide?

I also have some rust stains on the back side of the roof that I am going back to clean up so I will try to clean that grease off and see what happens. I'll post some pictures when I'm done. It was another big job!

Brian,

How were your results with the grease? What did you finally use on it? What did you use on the rust stains? I appreciate your posts and knowledge on these types of problems.

Mike,
When I went back to do the grease, the business owner told me that the hood cleaning guy was coming out the next week and that I should not waste my time. He said that guy cleans the grease off when he does the hoods. I never had to mess with it. Sorry I didn't have a better end to the story, but I was going to do that part of the job for free and I was happy that I did not have to do that!

Brian,
Thanks for the reply. Hopefully the the guy cleaning the range hoods didn't screw up your roof job.

Caustic soda or a chemical that breaks down fats, oils and grease using ammonia would work well on this project. Brian, great job on doing your homework!
