Customer wants no SH

Warn them without it will require pressure washing or heavy rinsing which will void the warranty.

The ARMA and shingle manufacturers recommend bleach/TSP for a very good reason.

It does not require pressure to remove streaks and will give immediate results and also will keep the roof clean the longest.

Tell them you will bag the downspouts and collect the chemical run-off to protect landscaping.

Also search out the technical bulletins Mike talked about by GAF/ELK and ARMA roof shingle manufactures and print them out and show it to the customer. Let them know the dangers of using a pressure washer and like Mike said it will void the warranty. You do have products out there that you can use with a pressure washer but say good bye to some of the heat protection, granules will be lost and 2 to 5 years off the shingles will be taken. In most cases when that is done the algae will return because it was never killed to begin with, good luck to bud.

You could tell them you have a proven, approved process that will clean their roof so well you will give them a warranty. If they still insist on no bleach, walk away.

Thanks for all the good advice. I will advise her on the damages then show her the GAF/ELK and ARMA report and if she is still difficult i will just walk away.

Maybe I missed something,...but what is the customers' reasoning on insisting no bleach?

I have walked away from jobs that someone insisted on no SH, and no pressure roof washing, do the same bud.

I have been asked for no bleach but it was because it ruber painted roof he said that warrenty will not cover sh damage. Show do clean something like that and how do you exsplain that it will not come clean with out the sh.

Call the manufacturer. Each roof type needs a different cleaning application. Metal is different from shingles and shakes are different again. Know your roof and call the MFG if there are any questions. Tell them that these roofs are so few and far between you need to do some research on the proper chems.

I’m heading out to her home on the 24th to do the bid. ill have more details later about why she is insisting no SH. I bet some other company didn’t dilute the chemicals on the ground properly and cause her plants to die. Taking any bets………..

Always have a copy of the ARMA Roof Cleaning Bulletin to show her on hand.
You are most likely up against a competitor using a Sodium Hydroxide roof cleaner, and rinsing it off wioth "no pressure".
Your competitor has bad mouthed Chlorine, you need to re educate her, IMHO.

I agree with Pat...try to sell your product and if they dont agree with the technique, then walk away. Remember that they called you because YOU are the professional, not them. If they want to act like they know better then you, then let them learn the hard way.

Please listen to these pro's in here. These roof cleaners know what they are talking about. They convinced me. I have been cleaning with SH now for about 1 year and will never revert back to anything else. I used Sodium Hydroxide for a while and regret ever using it. I never used Sodium Precarbonate so I cann't comment on that.

Hey Chris,

How did it go? The best you can do, as the experienced pros here have said better than I can, is to educate the consumer. How many of us get most of our work by informing consumers of the choice to have their roof cleaned rather than replaced? The same thing applies to using SH vs. some other sort of cleaner.

I think that's often people's biggest concern.
