This is the worst roof I have seen this year. Homeowners had 12 trees removed that were overhanging the roof. It is a mess.

Take tons of great before and after pictures Scott. Take them from every angle you can. They make a great addition to a web site or portfolio when you can show how your non pressure roof cleaning methods removed that much moss!

I've got a job coming up that looks like just like that.  Did you do any prep to the shingles, or did you just spray with applesauce and follow up in a week?

Did you use a 30% SH mixture, or stronger?  How much TSP?  Borax?

Share your story so I can learn!

Thanks.

Just some advice on the roof, it should turn out okay or very good but you do not know what the shingles will look like under the green growth. If it has eaten away at the granites to much you may have areas of black or less areas of asphalt on the shingles due the the green algae feeding from it over the years it was there.

I would clean it with a few coats then leave it set and let mother nature do her thing for a few weeks, then go back and maybe hit it again two weeks later. Just tell your customer it will take a little time because of all the green algae build up from the years. Take a lot of pictures and you may need to go back 3 or 4 weeks later to take your final picture but it should turn out great just time is all you will need.

This is the worst roof I've ever seen.  I couldn't even tell what type of roof it was.  If anyone can tell please let me know.  This is a "T" shaped, ranch style house used as commercial space.  Saw it on the way to a pw job and couldn't help but to stop in awe.  Would it be wrong to do 1 side free for web/flyer ad?Novawebpics 003.jpgNovawebpics 004.jpgt

Now that is a tuffy, I do not think I would attempt that one. It would take multiple treatments and hell you might even know how bad the shingles are under neath. Depending on who it is they my try and say you damaged the roof when they neglected it for so long. I would not even attempt that one but if you can get it, good luck and be safe.

I think this is sage advice.  As roof cleaners, our easiest problem to solve is "roof algae", the bacteria G. Magma.  The combination of disinfectant and lightening agents work incredibly well to remove the black staining.  While the same LOVE can be used to get rid of moss, and it will probably kill it all completely after a few treatments, you might be getting yourself into a bit of a mess, especially if you do it for free.  Either way you're probably going to have to brush the roof after everything dies.

You think this is sage advice, did you mean sad advice or something. As a roof cleaner you make your choices on what roofs you decide to clean. As a contractor and doing roofs for many years I personally would not do that one. I know what the love mix will do and not do, yes it will kill the green mold and bacteria on the roof but again after years of damage that can accure from it the shingles can also get damaged after time, with that kind of excessive damage growth you may find damaged shingles under neath once it is cleaned and then again maybe not. Also you advice someone to use a brush on the roof once everything dies, once every thing dies the rain will wash it off. I would never suggest using a brush on a roof but again that is me.

Again it is a roof that I would not do and just offered advice from my years of roof cleaning, not sure what your experience is but again we just try to help one another here is all. Good luck with the job if it happens.

10% FINDERS FEE FROM A ROOFER SOUNDS LIKE THE BEST ADVICE TO ME. But I would love to see before and after shots on that one. So if you do go for it, take lots of before and after pics and post them.

We finished the roof a couple weeks ago. The home owners were happy, but I was not as pleased with the outcome. There was significant granule loss that I did not see until the moss was begining to die off. We went the first day and sprayed a strong applesauce mix. We let it stand for a week and went back expecting to finish the job. Unfortunately, the old moss was dying off, but new moss growing. So we again sprayed a strong mix and waited another week. This time almost all of the original moss was gone and most of the new moss was dying. So we rinsed the roof to help the dead moss roll of the roof. We found more new moss growth and discussed the problem with the homeowner. We agreed to spray the entire roof with roundup but they had to sign a release that all responsibility for that application was on the homeowner. Even after the added cost for the roundup application, we lost alot on this job. This was a tough lesson learned, but we are looking at what happened and how we will handle these situations in the future. I drove by last week and it looks like all the moss is finally gone.

It def looks like a shake roof. Most likely the wood is rotted and in bad shape. If you clean it, it will most likely need to be replaced after which could open a can of worms with the owner.

Knowing that, it would be unethical to clean a roof that you know needs to be replaced. Call a roofer if anything and try to get a 10% finders fee. Then, if you know it is going to be replaced, clean it for fun and get pics before the replacement.

Nice pics by the way
