Removing paint from shingle roof

What should I use to remove paint from shingles. The paint has been on the roof for about 6 yrs. It covers a pretty large area. Should I use paint remover? Will this change the color of the shingle?

Thanks,

Action Roof Cleaning

Hi and Welcome Joey. If it really is paint on asphalt shingles I would personally pass on that job. Paint remover would probably damage asphalt shingles due to the use of solvents that will break down asphalt as well as paint. That is just a guess though, I have never run into one of these. If they are cedar shingles, they need to be treated just like stripping a cedar deck. I would probably pass on that job too, lots of backbreaking work, especially if it is an actuall solid color paint instead of a clear or semi stain. The PWI has info on cleanign wood, here is the link:
http://www.propowerwash.com/board/upload/index.php

I am not sure if anyone here has actually posted anything on a painted asphalt or wood roof.  We need a little more details in your question.
Is it a metal roof?? wood, asphalt, slate??
Is it a paint, stain, clear sealent, powder caoting or tar/elastometric coating??
Latex or oil if it is paint on wood or metal?
If it is actuall latex house paint on asphalt shingles, wow did they ever make a mistake!!

If it is just a spill on the roof, it is too bad it wasn't cleaned up right away 6 years ago.  I still don't know the answer to thet one, but someone here definitly does.
Please give us a more detailed question, if you can't find the answer in your search.

Yes it is paint on asphalt shingles. How it got there was vandalism at a high school and it's one of my best customers who's head of the maintence dept for the school board here. Today I'll try to find out if it's oil or latex. Also I'm going to the paint store to see what recommend.

The only thing you can do is paint over it with a color matching the shingles.

Best thing is to have their insurance cover replacement of the shingles. Anything you use to try and remove the paint runs the risk of damaging the integrity of the shingles.

How old is the roof,  Maybe your customer can color match the shingles and only need to replace the damaged ones.  Or better yet leave it to the insurance company.

Yes they will replace the damaged shingles. But since it happened so long ago they are unable to file a claim with their insurance company. Thanks for the info you guys!
