Limestone as a Feeder Source/OCF

Another question that I asked the Owens corning Tech Line was: Does Owens Corning

recognize that the limestone filler used in fiberglass shingles constitute the host source

for the algae? They maintain that it does not. When asked what is the host source beside

water and sunlight...that were very evasive. Just kept talking about it being an airborne

spore.

It would not surprise me that one day all the manufacturers will be dragged into a

class action algae suit. Very guarded on the answers. And as I mention before, a

rep from another manfr has said that they are switching to a non-limestone filler.

That's funny you say that about the class action law suit, because I was working with a developer in Springfield, Ohio who was in the process of doing that because of all the money he has had to spend in either cleanings or replacements. Haven't talked to him in a few months but if I do I'll let you how things are going, but hey it doesn't bother me just money in my pocket.

They are quite a few companies that make shingles with an inhibator in them, although they are a bit more pricey.

The longest warranty I have been able to find is 20 years for algae resistance.

I think most are 10 years but I find that some actually start to show streaks after 8.

Luckily only the new roofs will have this new shingle and the old ones will still need to be cleaned. It may end up that they are using a different stone and I have seen this algae on granite also. Just look at grave markers.

Oh yeah, gravemarkers is a business all itself for cleaning contractors. Algea loves virtually any porus stone. But we can waterseal stone to slow it down, can't say the same for roofs..yet...
