Boric Acid For Roof Treatments

Read -

Others in the pesticide manufacturing industry have found that boric acid is an effective and reliable long term pesticide. Consider the fact that the environmentalist groups approved of its use, contrary to their stand on the EPA de minimus policy. When they discovered a possible decrease in sperm count and no development of the egg capsule or ovum plus the stopping of fetal and embryonic development in roaches with the potential to similarly affect other insects, this made it the perfect pesticide, and with the blessings of the environmen- talists.

Those in the fungicide and wood preservative manufacturing industries discovered that boric acid and/or borates are effective and reliable long term fungicides and preservatives. When wood was treated with boric acid and/or borates and then placed in a damp and warm area, the ideal environment for fungus growth you would have no fungus growth. These chemicals also work as a termiticide (prevents and/or kills termites and other wood destroying insects) -- unlike other fungicides and preservatives, which would also break down. Boric acid and/or borates are derived from natural elements, therefore they do not break down readily. When boric acid and/or borates are used as fungicides and preservatives, they serve as a growth regulator rather than a desiccant.

Fungi are plants that contain no chlorophyll. Therefore, they cannot make their own food and so they must have an outside source of food, in this case wood. There are four requirements for fungus growth; first is food, such as cellulose and lignin which is contained in all wood; second is air; third is warmth; and, fourth is moisture.

I do not wish to see the loss of boric acid and/or borates as we have seen in the past the loss of so many other fine pesticides, due to improper methods of application, which in many cases unnecessarily exposed people to hazardous chemicals. Boric Acid is one of the safest pesticides if used correctly.

That is very interesting - could this treatment be sold as a "maintenance contract" to customers? If the cost is beneficial anyway. I'll look into it, but what do you think Chris?

That explains Borate treated lumber. We have been using it in consruction for the last 4 or 5 years since someone decided the old treated stuff with arsenic in it was unsafe... lol. You learn something new every day.

From what I have been reading Boric Acid is NOT the same as Borax. With that I have also read that just like SH it can be very damaging to the plants if mis applied. Need to read more later.

Hey give him a break. If someones on here enough to post 250 times theyre sure to have learned something!lol

Me on the other hand??? Im fool enough to.......

1 mix some of that apple cider stuff up

2 go find a roof with some of that algae stuff on it

3 water the bushes

4 cover the bushes

5 water the tarp

6 climb up the ladder

7 spray that apple cider stuff on that algae

8 water the tarp again

9 roll the tarp up

10 water the bushes again

11 look at the roof and think dagum that stuff works!

seriously though I read on here every chance I get and am trying to soak up everything I can
AND the best feeling ever is taking the info from the old pros here and going out and putting it into action.

My main 3 focuses while roof cleaning ( feel free to expand for me)

1 spray that stuff on the roof w/o breaking my neck.

2 DONT KILL THE LANDSCAPING

3 DO a good job so I get to spray more stuff on roofs lol

WOW Pat I don't know what set you off but I did not see his post until after I had posted mine. Sometimes I leave a window open for hours while doing something else. Was not answering Vinny but making a coment. I didn't know the difference until I started reading about it.

You have taken several swipes at me personally and I don't care but I would like it if you did that in a PM instead of the boards as that is not beneficial here. If I am wrong with the informatiom then correct me on the board so others can benefit from the correct method. Posting helps me clarify what I am absorbing and get corrections for what I regurgitate incorrectly.

I think that your are angry because you think I am getting all this for free and you want everyone to pay a 50-100 dollar fee for the information. Well I have already donated 50 and plan to donate more when I get rolling. You can always check with the admins if you don't believe me.

Chris I too would prefer that but I have only had my rig set up for a week and have sold my first one to be cleaned this week and have a quote to a assisted living center. Spent several days passing out flyers etc all week. Sales is my weakest point but I am working on that daily. Heck I even experimented with chems yesterday for a house and gutter wash. I have had the time to make those posts being unemployed and waiting to complete the trailer.

Now those efforts in the last month are starting to pay off being listed very high on google and phone starting to ring. One guy told em he was just going to purchase a pressure washer because he was selling the house. He just couldn't afford the cleaning.

Well now I hope this thread can get back on track.

Good Question Jeff ?
Since it occurs naturally, I expect the Sun has little effect on it ?

If you spray this stuff around your home exterior, then spread the powder then add some sevin dust on top you'll definitely have less bugs.

Old ladies in some asian countries even use boric acid as a facial peel. Women can even use it (rx grade) for yeast infections. It's remarkable stuff...

It is interesting that you mentioned boric acid, I have spent the last two days trying to research it and it's application in roof cleaning (a work in progress) Boric acid is a great mold and fungus preventative for timber and it kills termites, I built a new house four years ago and sprayed all my timber frames with boric acid, we have big hungry termites in my area and I did not want them feasting on my new home, boric acid is "a proven mold preventative and termite killer" for this purpose I personally highly recommend it.

as far as roof cleaning and as a mold killer/preventative for your style of shingle roofs, I see no reason why it would not work (it soakes in to the timber and does not wash off or degrade) it is a very weak and safe acid! ,  let me know what you all think.

I just looked at a house for sale in my area, it is only 4 years old and was going realy cheap, I quickly found out why, the whole timber frame of the home has been destroyed by termites, it's now a pull down and rebuild job, was worth $800,000 now selling for $350,000 (4 years old)

When mixed with sulfuric acid, borax becomes boric acid. Boric acid is used in numerous industrial applications, including cleaning and preservation. Boric acid is also used as a mild antiseptic, and as an eye solution for people experiencing eye irritation. It also marketed as an alternative insecticide, since it is more gentle than some chemical compounds.

It takes a bit longer to work, as an insecticide, but it is very effective.
I bought a pound of it, and sprinkled it all over, around my house.
Took about a month, and all roaches are gone!
Just thh little german ****roaches remained, that  were already in the house.
A few roach hotels placed in strategic locations did what several exterminators failed to do.
ALL homes in Tampa are infested with insects, termites, coackroaches, ants, you name it!
The cheap boric acid did the trick, and spiders  hate it too, and so do mud dawbers, wasps, etc.
