battle with MOSS/LECHIN

I'm just getting started with roof cleaning. The majority of calls I've gotten are for roofs covered with moss and lechin. I've read a few posts about this but would like to hear some your experiences and techniques to kill it. Is the apple sauce/cider enough or do I need to add something else? Any good advice?     Thanks

Rich

Yes the sh will kill the moss and lichen, but then you have to decided....to rinse or not to rinse.......{ not to get into that whole thing again } The thing is the moss and lichen will die that day...but will not come off on it's own for a couple weeks. It die's,then rots and decays releasing it's grasp on the shingles and the wind and rain carries it away. So you have to let the customer know this or.....gently rinse it away with a garden hose, this will take much time depending on how much of the roof is covered. I have sprayed roofs heavy with it and it took atleast two hours to rinse. I have not rinsed the same type and it does go away over a few weeks. I am not rinsing this year, I think when you rinse it,the grasp is still there and takes more granules with it then if you waited.

Hey Rich, these jobs need to be sold as what they are. They are neglected roofs by the home owner and there isn't a quick fix. Tell the customer:

"Ideally the roof should have been done a few years earlier,...but seeing how we are where we are,....now, all that can be done is kill the growth and let it fall off naturally over time and try to keep up with it in the future"

I know some guys will go back after a few weeks or so and manually rinse,...I don't do that. Still risky in removing granules. Once granules are gone,..they're gone. Can't explain it away.

No sugarcoating these jobs!!!

Jeff

I did an estimate for one of these last week. I also added that I did not know how much damage the lichen had already done and would not be held responsible for any granule loss because the roof should have been done several years ago. I think my bid scared them when they saw the price. But, if I am going to do a job like this, it has to be worth my time and effort. Not to mention my reputation.
