FIRST OFF, I'M NEW TO THE ROOF CLEANING BUSINESS AND WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR SO MUCH VALUABLE INFO! I'VE DONE A TON OF READING AND LEARNED A LOT. I'M READY TO ROLL NOW THAT THE WEATHER IS BREAKING HERE IN THE PHILLY AREA. I'VE BOUGHT ALL THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED AND HAVE 4 JOBS LINED UP.......NOW, BEFORE I START I NEED SOME ADVICE. MY SH SUPPLIER WILL BE A LOCAL POOL STORE WHO HAS A REASONABLE PRICE BUT THE SUPPLY OF SH HE HAS NOW IS THE LEFTOVER FROM LAST SEASON. I WAS GOING TO DO MY HOUSE AS A TEST RUN BEFORE I DO THE OTHER 4 HOUSES THIS COMING WEEK. I WAS GOING TO BUY ENOUGH SH TO DO ALL THE JOBS. DO YOU THINK THIS SH IS FRESH ENOUGH TO USE IN THE APPLE SAUCE/CIDER MIXTURES? OR, SHOULD I BUY ENOUGH TO DO MY HOUSE TO SEE HOW IT GOES?..........THANKS!

Regardingf the SH: Buy only as much as you need to do the job on your home to start. If the leftover isn't strong enough you will be out less money.
You can get some test trips and check the level of the free chlorine from the pool store.
Also, run it thru your fingers and if it turns white and is very slippery then it still has potency.
Another idea. Buy 1-2 gallons and use a pump up sprayer to test an area of your roof and you will see how it cleans, then go from there. More than a month and I would be concerned regarding active chlorine strength...
Just for reference....Please do not use all CAPS as it is considered a form of YELLING and we don't want to yell at one another here on this very friendly roof cleaning trade forum, as we get enough of that in the real world
Hi Rich, I think I spoke to you on the phone. If you've never sprayed a roof before, spraying your own roof is a good idea. But, I would use just water to do your first test run. Just gives you an idea of the pump performance and such. As far as the bleach goes, rub it between your thumb and forefinger, it should get warm. Especially, in the cooler start up month of April, you need good performance from your products.
Rich, this really is the best roof cleaning forum on the net. You want to be a part of this site and post often. If you don't have a website I suggest that be your next move. Along with the obvious exposure it brings your business, you can also send your website address to realtors and property management companies. This site is number 2 in the roof cleaning search, people who come here may see your site and give you an edge. Didn't mean to get off the subject, but wanted to tell you that.
I will do that!.......thanks! i'll go re-introduce myself to the store owner and pick up enough sh to test on my roof. that sh has been sitting since last fall (more than a month)
yes jeff, i did speak to you on the phone and appreciated the time and info. you helped me a great deal. also, creating a website is next. i took care of some local advertising (door hangers, realtors, ect). a website may take a while being i'm not too computer literate.
i'll keep you updated how this week goes! thanks

my first call was to univar in morrisville which is about a 40 minute drive. they would not sell to me saying they only sell in large quantities. their sales rep referred me to the pool company i'm buying from. they buy their sh from univar. has anybody else had this problem?.............thanks for the info!!

I deal with Univar in Altoona, Pa. The only requirement they had when I set up an account was a minimum first order of $300.00. Now I can buy, what ever quantity I need. Did you explain to them you would be a continuing customer? I'm going there this week and I will ask them if if they know of other Univars criteria. I would also go in person.
i would appreciate that jeff....thanks! i did a test run on a small snack bar roof at my kid's little league baseball field. i was not thrilled with results. i did not get much foaming action and it ran off as fast as i applied it. i added more dawn and it did not help much. i used the apple cider mix. it did lighten up the roof a bit but still heavy black streaks. the weather here is cool in the mid 50's. i feel it is the sh causing the problem. what do you think?

Not sure how you mixed it but,....it is way to cold yet to be cleaning roofs with typical results. Don't judge your efforts until the whether gets warmer. Temperature makes all the difference.
Um...um....um.....probably at least a couple more weeks. Not this week,... possibly next week on a trial run. Excited about getting started but, not willing to waste chemical or sacrifice reputation over impatience. We need that nice warm Spring weather,...not this chilly Spring weather.
No, Mike I don't,....I don't even own a hot machine. The work I do doesn't require heat,...but you're right,...heating up the mix would make it work better, even in the warmer months.

I use my 80 gallon HOT water heater in my garage to warm up my roof mix and water tank in the winter.
I also use hot water to pre-mix my TSP at my house.
You have a hot water connection for your washing machine in your house, right?
You can put a brass Y garden fitting on it with a short hose long enough to put it out your window and pull out your hose from your trailer and attach it to your hose from the house, so you can pre-mix your roof mix with hot water.
