Have any of you bagged the gutters with duct tape then when you take the tape off pulled paint off the gutters?

Downspouts here have a baked on finish. Duct tape shouldn't hurt the finish. The only time I have seen downspouts with chipped paint they were steel. You should be able to see brush marks. Try using masking tape, not as sticky. We save our duct tape to hold the fenders on our trucks.

On occassion the H.O on older or renovated properties has had the home painted and when gutters are present, and sometimes we have noticed that the H.O. had the gutters re-painted as well.

As was mentioned about making a visual observation of possible brush marks to determine the gutters ability or inability to accept the duct tape or it causing the removal of the paint from the repainted gutter, here is another solution to duct tape and its more environmentally friendly too.

One-Wrap® Tape
indprod_onewrap.jpg

VELCRO® Brand ONE-WRAP® TAPES are self-gripping fasteners which are a flexible and reusable back-to-back fastening system.

misc_cleardot.gif
Size Yards / Roll Price
3/4'' 25 Yards / Roll $0.88 / Yard
5/8'' 25 Yards / Roll $0.76 / Yard
1'' 25 Yards / Roll $0.91 / Yard
1 1/2'' 25 Yards / Roll $1.11 / Yard
2'' 25 Yards / Roll $1.40 / Yard
misc_cleardot.gif
Note: This is just an example of pricing, you may find it cheaper elsewhere.

Home Depot and Loew's both carry Velcro Hook and Loop type straps that come in an assortment of sizes, some, large enough to go around most "K" style gutters and others, as well as the poly trash bag. These strips can be opened, wrapped around the back, to the front of the gutter and then cinched down tight around the bags.

It doesn't ALWAYS work as well as Duct Tape so in some situation you may combine them, i.e. use a smaller amount of tape and the velcro strips to secure the bags to gutters.

The best thing is that they are re-usable and can be used again and again whenever gutters need bagging, just stick them to themselves and put them in a gallon ziplock bag so you can locate them later and they stay cleaner so they will continue to function for a long time which saves the landfill from lots of wasted duct tape.

I hope this helps some of you.

Have a Profitable Day!

Keep one thing in mind. The runoff from the Roof Cleaning, depending on what kind of Roof your Cleaning, can make the bag very heavy to carry and CAN cause it to tear when carrying it to a disposal area. especially when your Cleaning a Tile Roof. Much more runoff than when you do a Shingle Roof Cleaning. My wife found this out first hand. She started putting the bags in an empty 5 gal bucket to be able to carry it off site after it was full. This worked out much better especially when their is a long distance to walk from the downspout back to the rig.

I remember that day well Chris. That sure was a HUGE Shingle Roof you guys Cleaned. I had a fun time helping out and watching you and your guys Clean that Shingle Roof. I've been by there a couple of times since you Cleaned it. It came out awsome!

You mentioned that you carry to run off from the down spouts back to the truck to dispose of ? Do you take it off site to dispose of ? Where I live I was told without a waste haulers license nothing can be hauled off site.  I work maint. in a chemical plant, and I know about the licensing for waste hauling chemicals,  not something a small business would ever want to get into.

What your hauling off site is the same thing you hauled to the site in the first place, only much less potent as exposure to the sun will break it down and after "fighting" with the algae it will just be a weaker version of what your carrying around anyhow.

Has anyone use 4" flexible piping connected to downspout and ran it to curb or to concrete slab than flushed out pipe and rinse down solution after cleaning roof ? I have read that some dump there run off at the street side. Many of the jobs I've been looking at are only 30-40' from curb side.

Yes, it works only if the yard slopes down towards the street. I only rinse the pipe.

our guys just tie the bags in a knot at the top and pull it as far up the back of the gutter as possible.

Not me.
But if it happens, I would be willing to bet, it is from "repainted" gutters, not the factory finish?

I usually hope they just don't fall down. Actually,.. I've used the knot idea, the tape idea and the zip tie idea.

I bet they were repainted! Or if you got some SH on the tape and gutter that could have done it as well. I like the corregated drain pipe method, but may not be suitable in all cases leading back to the bags.

If anyone feels the need to have to tie the bags and y'all are worried about paint issues etc... then just use a zip tie or velcro strips to tightly secure the bags to the gutter to catch the Roof Cleaning mix. You may even be able to use real small bungie cords as well. I think Lowes and HD carry small ones.

We use zip ties with the plastic bags for use and the bags do get heavy but also that is the ground guys job to ensure he changes them out when needed, get the 3ml construction bags at home depot or lowes. Also if it does get to heavy we carry a small tarp with us, if we can not carry it we just put it on the tarp, someone drags the tarp and the other person holds the bag closed until we make it to the curb. We try to use the gutte extenders if the slope is downward away from the house.

I bought some of those small bungees with the ball on the end. I think they will hold the bag on the gutter. You can adjust them to what size you need.
