We must have some really hot love. One coat usually gets it. We may have to spot a few areas, but never a second coat.

Thanks for the heads-up about the IPA from Wal-mart.

Mike, thank you greatly for the tip on this Apple Cider Sauce! We cleaned a roof in Evansville this morning, and used your mix for the first time.

Results: Nothing short of spectacular. Of the gazillions of roofs we have cleaned, no mix has worked like this hybrid formula for us. Two thumbs waaayyy up.

WHAT ???
This Is Heresey no
A "hybrid" of Apple Sauce and Apple Cider, LOL
JUST KIDDING guys, it is ALWAYS good to try new things smile
None of us came outta Momma cleaning roofs, and there is NO Book on the very best way to do it either.
Only by experimentation will we find what is best.

Sorry I have not tested the new samples I was sent of the Chlorine stable surfactant/thickener yet.

I have had a lot of other diversions to my time.

For ONE thing, BUSY as all get out smile

But I plan to do some preliminary tests of the stuff this week.

Just treat it as you would paint thinner or Gasoline.  ISP is sometimes used as a fuel, but it isn't any different than the saftey measures you are probably already taking for gasoline.  No smoking smile.  Also you should not need to carry much of it around with you on jobs.

If you are using the 70% it is very safe as it is 30% water

Also you can just mix your ISP in a 5 gallon bucket of half water and voila no more bomb

Here is the PDF file for a product made to clean soot http://www.aldonchem.com/msds-insta-clean.pdf

A look at the MSDS reveals something sounding like Anit Freeze, LOL
Hey, if it dont work, at least you can assure them the roof will never freeze smile

This company says their product will clean light to medium Soot from walls, etc.

They suggest a Grout Cleaner for harder Soot Stains.

I looked at the MSDS and it contained BOTH Phosphoric and Hydrochloric acid.

We dont have Soot Problems here in  Tampa, FL.

SWEET!!  Glad to hear it!  Chris is my inspiration.

He posted the two different mixes, Apple Sauce and Apple Cider.

I was getting irritated with Borax not dissolving well, so I figured why not combine the two best bleach enhancers from both mixes!  TSP and alcohol!

IT WORKS!

Check out this Soot Cleaning Patent http://www.freshpatents.com/Soot-cleaner-dt20060525ptan20060107974.php

LOOK at the last paragraph ?

It suggests Isopropyl Alcohol, LOL

SOO, MAYBE overly strong with respect to rubbing alcohol Apple Cider will do the trick ?

And, it also lists several surfactants and Sodium based cleaners, wonder why TSP wont work ?

Check this out too http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4297803.html

This  uses rubbing alcohol to dissolve a few chemicals in to prevent Algae on Fishing Nets !

The chemicals are non water soluble, and must be dissolve in rubbing alcohol.

Once applied, they STAY on the fishing net and prevent Algae !!!

So MUCH good stuff in the Patents smile

I want to thank Mike Sullivan! I had a Really bad Roof to clean. It was COVERD in Moss, Lichens you name it. The Apple Cider Sauce WORKED great! In Greenvile SC we get alot of Moss build up. I wish i took pic's but the camera was broke. The customer was so happy! infact she was telling me that a roofing contractor came to give her an estimate and broke a pice of her shingle and said "It is so brittle you need to replace your roof" Now it looks like new again!

Thanks Again Mike!

Hi and Welcome James,
Nice to have you on board, I love VA beach.

Most people use 3M masks with 6009 filters (Mercury Vapor/Chlorine Gas)
which Mike turned me on too as well.

Just wanted to suggest that you utilize the search feature up top of the page. It really will help you find the info you need on the board. I personally never really used a Blog board before and find it alot easier to find the info I need using that search tool.

There are a few companies here who completely renovate, including repointing and respraying with acrylic based paints of tile roofs. I am looking at subcontracting the cleaning from them. I am concerned that Apple Cider/Sauce may leave residue which is incompatible with their paint.

NOT to worry Nick, we used to clean roofs for a Tile Re Glazing company.
Just RINSE them good when you are done, and no worries.

If you are just starting out and I have read many places that you need to stir the ingredients to mix them well and I understand this but if I am starting out using a 55 barrel that only leaves a very small hole to stir the ingredients.

Here are my thoughts....

combine the TSP and water the night before...
I can actively shake the barrel back and forth to mix the TSP and water.
Now after adding the SH this gets difficult.

Now most of my jobs to start are going to be within 30 minutes of the house so what if I get ready to go by adding the SH, alcohol and ajax/dawn and let the motion of the travel mix the solution. Is this going to be too long before I start pumping and degrade the SH too much?

Do I need to add the SH and TSP together or mix the SH in the morning?

HERE is what I would do, since you do not yet have a tank.
Just make regular Apple Cider w/o the TSP, for NOW ?
The rubbing alcohol and ajax dish  soap can simply be dumped in the drum and swished around.'
Be SURE to vent the drum, if it is not already ?
OR, simply combine ingredients on site ?

TSP ya GOT to stir, kinda  hard to do in a drum ?

DON't let a small thing STOP you from cleaning roofs ?
