What type of equipment would you use to spray a sealer on a cedar roof? Something that you could reach some distance with would be nice.

I know you cant use same spray equipment for sodium percarbonate and oxalic acid but could you run either one of these thru a rinsed system used with SH?

I personally would use a paint sprayer. Depending on what stain you use I know painters that use a pump up sprayer.

The airless paint sprayer. You can rent one at your local paint store.
Yes you can use your SH system for Precarp and OX. You must rinse well before changing as the SH and Precarb will foam if mixed and go inert. The ox and precarb will foam if mixed and go inert. The ox and SH can create heat and volatile reactions.

To use your SH tank:
1 empty it, use all Sh chem up on something.
2 rinse it, and pump it out
3 add 4 cups Sodium precarb and fill it up with water and drain it. This will react with any residual SH residue and remove it.
4 Make your Precarb mix and use it.
5 Drain tank, repeat step 2
6 add a few cups of ox and fill it up to remove precarb residue.
7 Make your ox and spray it.
8 rinse/drain tank again add a small amount of SH and fill with eater, drain again and viola, ready for SH use again.

For smaller jobs, rig up a pvc draw tube to your pump and mix in a bucket or 10-20gallon tank, so that you do not have to rinse your mix tank.

Larry I'm thinking if you don't know how to apply a sealer to a roof that means you don't know much about sealers, am I right?

because you better do your homework first, you can't just put any kind of sealer on a roof

I mean you CAN physically put any kind of sealer on a roof, It just may not be what the customer would like or perform like it should

that depends on the nozzle size, length of the extension, and how big the pump is

Airless sprayer. Mine was only 300. Had it 'bout 7 years now. Greyco I think is the name? Spray all my decks with it.

Dont take off and throw away the plastic card. You are not going to use it that much, I dont. You will need it!

Also... Airless sprayer, set the spray first, out of the box. If you spraying same chit all time, set and forget, like me.

Practice and set spray against a big piece of card board. Till spray uniform.

What Clyde said is correct, and I bet he has coated more of them than me. The truth is if you actually powerwash a cedar roof with the Precarb, you will not be able to walk on it while cleaning. WAY to slippery when wet and covered in algae. So usually you will need a lift and the lift will solve most of your reach problems.
Spraying outdoors can be very tricky!! If there are homes too close you will need absolute 0 wind to apply the sealer and prevent over spray. If you spray to unevenly or thinly it will show on the roof. I suggest you practice with the paint sprayer on a lower end project first.

really it only makes sense to apply a high industrial clear coating to a cedar shake roof after cleaning it, cleaning is only part of the Job, but by appling a pure oil wood preservative, it will preserve the roof and make it last for years to come

how ever it will still grey out, but the wood will be preserved. nobody wants color on their shake roof

we use ladders and roof hooks to stadle the roof, we do not walk directly on the shakes, we do not use cork shoes, they can damage the shakes.

Wood restoration was our speciality before, pressure washing. We still do it, and we need get back into it, I use to get 5, 6000 dollars to do some jobs. It would take me and a helper no more than three days to restore a natural wood home.

After all that is why I moved to jersey

Clyde if I could powerwash Cedar every day, I probably would not have gotten this focused on building my biz. It is very rewarding work, just feels great to see and smell that clean cedar.

I know Bill, I am really starting to miss it as we speak, I kinda enjoy being on big, high paying jobs for a few days instead of all the ripping and running, our work is absolutely beautiful I will try to dig up some pics

Thanks for all the replies! I dont know alot about paint sprayers, I just thought it would be nice to have something close to the same reach as the soft wash (air  driven pump) system I have now.  As far as a sealer goes I am not an expert but have been a carpenter for many years and have been around many types of sealers. I understand and agree about the wind! That could be real bad!

Selling a sealer would almost require a lift on every job it seems if your not going to walk on it. I just dont see getting a paint sprayer to come close to the same reach.

Larry we use roof hooks with wheels on them, we push it up the roof and the once past the ridge we flip it over, then we get on it. sure it will hold as long as their is some kind of pitch, please use your own judge ment. its always a good idea to use rope and harness too,

Yeah the hooks can work too, we never really did it that way. I would think if you tried to spray far with your sprayer it would be too unevenly applied unfortunately.
