Ted,
There is a point at which it is just too windy to spray. The last time I pushed it, I was doing a home in a subdivision with 1/2 acre lots. There were people replacing a pool deck in the back yard of the neighbor next door. The wind was actually swirling the mist around the back of the house and taking it all the way over to the workers. They came over at one point to tell me that I was continually hitting them with spray. Fortunately they were pretty understanding. They moved from the back yard just long enough for me to finish up and we packed up and went home.

There are far too many things that can go wrong with the wind carrying your overspray/mist. It is not worth taking the chance. It is an easy way to be sued. There is no amount of Ammonyx that will keep the mist from being carried by the wind. Don't fool yourself into thinking you can fight the wind.

Brian

Thanks Brian, and to everyone else that had input.  We'll continue to take the cautious/conservative approach and reschedule when the winds are greater than 15 mph.

I think Brian hit it right on the head..........It lands on a neighbors " anything " and you could have a problem. I don't think I would knock on neighbors door explaining what you are doing on " non windy " days. Would make me a little nervous. A good ground man on a calm day should have it all covered.

I'm pretty sure that with the wind we are having today, you would not even be able to get any cleaner on the roof! We have steady 30 mph wind with 40 and 50mph gusts. Hasn't been this windy in a long time.

I mix my ( love) up with an xtra cup or two of ammonyx lo and then I went to a garden style nozzle. I can change the spray pattern with that a bit better. I then get on the roof. I don't like to but with the wind here I have to. Make sure to use some form of fall protection. I then put my nozzle on a wide pattern and stay as close to the roof as posable with my spray. I have even talked to the neighbors and got permission to water down their houses, and bushes in case of over spray. I can't wait to try the thicker ammonyx M I think that is what its called. Good luck with the wind and I hope you get some calmer weather.

3 pints of ammonyx m per 100 gal of mixture is nice.  It clings to the roof with minimum run off when you do not have gutters on a steep roof.  I lay it on heavy and let it run down the roof rather that having over spray by trying to hit the edges.

I don't usually have an issue with wind, but a house a few weeks ago gave me some real problems. There was a detached garage in front of the house and I could not get my ladder anywhere near one side of the house. I had to place my ladder on the side of the garage and spray from there. It was windy and I had to come back to finish because it just wasn't cutting it. Damn wind.

That was on Tuesday, but even in the flurries we were still spraying.

Today we did a house in Stroudsburg with the wind driving me crazier than I normally am. Since I had nothing else booked for today I just took my time and sprayed between the gusts. Needless to say we had every piece of plant material covered with tarps, plasitic sheeting and umbrellas. The tarps and plastic were held down with some old window sash weights I had around the shop.

Hank, That sounds like alot of prep work for a roof cleaning, or maybe Im just getting old. I don't tarp or cover anything, in and out no problems. I will just wait for the wind to clear out.

The wind kicked my butt yesterday too. We did 4 roofs and everything was fine until the last one. It was a big house and I had to reschedule to go back on Monday. I tried but was getting hit with waves of cleaner in the face! Of course I had goggles and a respirator but it was not worth it.

 Charlie,

Although we are booked solid I'm the first to admit that I'm relatively new at roof cleaning. This house(picture attached) had some small roof areas with no gutters and a ton of mature plant material. The home is in one of the old school money areas of the Poconos and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Heck, I'm older(day older than dirt) than you and it took us 15 minutes to set up. Perhaps as our experience grows we will eliminate the use of tarps/sheeting..then again may be not.

Hank

Hank,

No gutters are a nightmare so I agree with the tarps. I usually over price non gutter homes on purpose because I don't want them. But you are right about an ounce of prevention. That home looks great, they must have been pretty happy.

Charlie,

The homeowners were happy with the results but were more impressed with my knowledge of their plant material and the care we took with the landscaping. I've found if you can identify something the homeowners are very passionate about and direct some of your comments towards that they will becomes more comfortable with you. I have a customer who owns two model t's and I spoke in great length about that with him. That rumble seat was a heck of a ride.

II agree hank a little prevention goes a long way. We tarp all the sensative plants and trees and we also treat them with our special blend of diamond plant wash.

Mike,

I can't wait for the Diamod Plant Wash(DPW) to hit the world wide market.
