Well this week put out about 4000 post cards... had 2 guys put them on driveways. I got 4 calls so far, 2 complaints saying that we are making their neighborhood look bad. the other said you can't throw them in the driveways no soliciting etc etc then she said that the neighbors are talking bad about our company because we put them on the driveways. but have two estimates to do today. I wanted to know what you thought about that....should i just do door hangers, it would take a lot longer to pass out? thanks guys

Interesting post. Been getting some flyers out myself. Handful of calls but no complaints yet. I bet if you had anticipated complaints you would of created a reply, like, "mam/sir, have you noticed the roofs of your neighbors? they're turning black! Did you know those ugly roof stains are a contageous algea that spread from house to house? If we dont correct this asap, you could be next!". The last thing we want to do is give our biz a bad name. Good post!

That's great!! The customers are talking about you. It means you got their attention. You sent out 4000 and only got 2 complaints? Don't change strategy because of that. We have gotten complaints for door hangers too. And yard signs.

You got a response and that's a good thing.

IMO I think throwing something in someones yard or driveway isnt the best way to make friends. I don't think I will be trying that method. Im not saying my way is any better because I got a call today from a guy that found about 20 or 30 of our postcards in the back of a church. One of two things happend...kids or competitors.

I knew a guy (home repairs, painting, etc.) once that drove thru neighborhoods and threw his business cards out the window that were paper-clipped to a penny. he would throw them in the location where the newspaper was sitting in their driveway. Just about every other week I would get one in my driveway. I never complained --- I'm sure some people called him. He got a lot of business out of it though.

I dont like to do that type of marketing.... I'll do door hangers though.

we get a news paper add that is thrown in our driveway every friday and if you drive my nieghborhood youll see them all over. SO i guess i should call them and complain. Listen we do what we have to do to get buisness. Just use the line that ed gave ( its a good one) for the complaints and press on.

Every call whether its to complain or for an estimate it has potenial to be a money call so take what you get especially this time of the year.

I understand why the thought of "Rocking" isnt all that appealing at first,  but I wouldnt recommend using 10x as much energy and time to walk door hangers to get the same response. Whats really the difference in a door hanger and an rock ad in the driveway? The biggest difference I see is that alot of people dont even use the front door and wont get the door hanger for a few days.

agressive marketing is good for the biz!
if complaints comes in consistently and in the same manner, i would adjust.
we are promoting cleanliness..being concern about complaints is the right attitude..

more power to you Precision Prowash!

This is great, If they are calling you there is your chance to sell them. Turn The negative furious into a positive.  biggrin Some people just like to complain furious and there isn’t anything you can do about that. I think that putting them in the drive way is not the best way to get customers. I would and do knock on the door and let them know what they have growing on their roof. It is more fun. When you talk to them, you’d be surprised how many don’t know or say they don’t know there roof
looks that nasty. confuse  Good Luck in your marketing.

I agree with Scott 4000 flyers and only 2 complaints, those were miserable people that complain about everything. Guys we gotta do what ever it takes, if you just sit at home and do nothing your going to starve this winter.

I have been thinking about the rock and flyer thing. And if some one was to throw one in my yard I would be like its just one more thing I have to pick up and throw away. I agree that it is a faster beter way than going door to door leaving hangers. But why not put some marbles and maybe a pen that has company info in the bag instead of a rock. You can find marbles on ebay about ten dollars for 300 . I know it would cost more but if someone threw that in my yard I would be like cool a free pen and marbles to put in the fish tank or give to kids. Then you have a better chance of the customer reading the flyer. Just some of my thoughts.

Thats a good idea. Only problem is when you are throwing 10,000 every 3 weeks like AC was doing Thats $333 per round, or almost $6k per year, just in marbles, and pens are alot more expensive. That doesnt include the cost of printing and the bags, and gas.

The idea is to keep it low cost while getting the maximum amount of exposure.

Like I said it would cost more money but I dont think every one starting out plans on throwing 10,000 flyers every three weeks.

That's a great response!
I guess 2 complaints out of 4000 isn't bad.

I think that the tricky part for this is determining effectiveness versus efficiency.  It will likely vary depending on the region, demographics,  'awareness' of roof cleaning etc.

IMHO, the bagged messages tossed in a driveway don't promote a classy, professional image.  I'm not judging or condemning, just freely sharing thoughts as a consumer.  (emphasis on the word consumer).

I'd suggest some comparisons to capture ROI / customer acquisition costs via postcard campaigns for one's own area/market ?

Example:  Deals closed based on 4k flyers fast (bagged) vs deals closed on 4k flyers placed on doors or mailbox POSTS.  The latter would need to include additional hourly wages of the people distributing them.

I betcha the numbers will dictate the best approach.  (Lead from the heart, yet manage by the numbers!)

Of course this doesn't take in to consideration other marketing methods in play at the same time, which could alter either results considerably - in a good way  smile
